filter question

I just bought a B+W 484 IR filter, 39mm, for my 28/2.8 asph. I didn't even realize that the Leica was available at the same store (B&H), I thought they weren't out yet at stores. So... does it matter in any substantive way? I'd assume not, and that whatever correction the M8 makes set to lens detection+IR filter on would be the same. Thanks .....Peter

Sean did a comparison among three brands: Leica, B+W and Heliopan. Like Carsten mentioned, in general for wide angle lenses, try to stick with Leica's own filters.

Apart from the possible optical differences - the issue I've had with B+W filters has been that the retaining ring in front of the glass is too thick - making the clip-in lens caps you get for some M lenses fall off very easily. In the Leica filters, there is much more thread available for the cap to grip.

Probably not a problem for the 28, since I assume you're using the hood.

thanks guys. I've lucked into a good solution. Turns out my 135/4 tele-elmar has a 39mm thread. It also has a hood. I just slapped the B+W on it, and will order the Leica filter for my 28mm. This is such a great forum. best.....Peter

I tried the B+W 46mm filter on my 28 Cron, and it has distinctly more blue/cyan corners than with my Leica filter. It is not necessarily objectionable, and it is not very strong, but it is there. I suppose that pros should use the Leica filter at least from 28mm and down, and maybe also serious amateurs. I will also do a test with my 35mm lens.

I just tried the 35 Summilux Asph, and with this lens I see mostly a colour difference, not confined to the corners, but overall. The Leica filter is a little redder, the B+W filter a little bluer. This is shooting a white wall wide open, unfocused, in early evening with a cloudy sky, and with the WB set to cloudy. If I had to guess, the B+W comes a little closer with the colour, but since I am shooting DNG, it isn't a problem anyway. It seems that the 28mm lens is the first focal length for which the Leica filter is better, at least in these really simplistic tests I have done.
