PARIS-14 Posted December 8, 2018 Share #1 Β Posted December 8, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello. I own a Leica SL with its 24-90mm. Not rich enough for the moment to purchase the 90-280mm, I purchased a Tamron SP 70-200mm DI VC USD f2.8 G2 (latest version) with a Canon mount. Then, I bought a Novoflex SL/EOS ring expecting it to fully work with the Tamron. Results: - The AF works OK and rather well as long as I have enough light, - But in Manual setting, or any of the PASM button, the aperture remains at... f0.7 (???) whatever I do in terms of camera or lens settings. I cannot move it from the figure and moving the aperture wheel does not change the picture in the EVF or the screen. For me this means that the aperture is not transmitted through the Novoflex ring. Am I correct? Does anyone has experienced such a problem and does someone knows if Novoflex is compatible with Tamron or Sigma lenses with a Canon mount? Do only Canon lenses work with Novoflex? Many thanks in advance for your answers.
Advertisement Posted December 8, 2018 Posted December 8, 2018 Hi PARIS-14, Take a look here Tamron 70-200 G2 on Leica SL with Novoflex ring... doesn't work!. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
PARIS-14 Posted December 9, 2018 Author Share #2 Β Posted December 9, 2018 OK here are some follow up. I tested tonight the Tamron 70-200mm with a Canon 5D mkIII camera and it works perfectly well whether in terms of AF or aperture!! Great lens by the way ! And I tested a Canon 70-200 f2.8 mkII with the Novoflex ring on my Leica SL and it too works perfectly well: AF & aperture! Conclusion, only Canon lenses do work with the Novoflex ring! A Tamron with a Canon mount does NOT allow you to set the aperture using the Novoflex ring on a Leica SL! Only the AF will work fine! π€ͺππ€¬ Conclusion nΒ°2: I have a Tamron to sell! Have a great day!
thighslapper Posted December 9, 2018 Share #3 Β Posted December 9, 2018 errr..... you should have read all the posts about the SL-EOS and SL-NIK adapters ...... Functionality varies enormously ..... and not all Canon lenses work properly either. Β 3rd party lenses such as Tamron and Sigma are even more of a gamble. Some Sigma Arts work perfectly, some erratically or slowly/incompletely.Β Try before you buy or ensure you can return for a refund .....
PARIS-14 Posted December 9, 2018 Author Share #4 Β Posted December 9, 2018 Yes Thighslapper, entirely my fault. I did read some of the related subjects of this forum, but certainly not all. I supposed that a third party working on a brand would have the same characteristics as the branded item, especially with newest products... And purchasing the ring in Germany and the lens in France at different times did not make it easy for me to try it before purchasing... In conclusion, this gave me a good lesson regarding compatibility and I will definitely be much more precocious in the future!Β I will just have to sell this great lens and hope not to lose too much... I love Leica products, but frankly even for a pro like me the price (probably rightfully) asked is way above reasonable possibilities considering the photography market over here! Merry Christmas to all.

Hopefully Sigma will start the mount replacement service next year. The Sigma Art lenses are really good optically but autofocus leaves a lot to be desired. Hopefully they will perform when (in my case) the Canon EOS mount is replaced for an L mount.
PARIS-14 Posted December 10, 2018 Author Share #6 Β Posted December 10, 2018 Ivar you are right. I also could have waited the launch of Sigma lenses with the L mount. But at the Paris Photo event last month, Sigma told me they don't know when they will produce and sell the Sigma with L mount compatible with the Leica SL. They say it will probably be during the second semester of 2019. And I needed a 70-200 for my work, so this is why I purchased the Canon. But who knows, if the Sigma L mount is... good enough, I might sell the Canon and get the Sigma 70-200 instead. Back to subject of this post. The Tamron has been sent back to the seller who has nicely agreed to refund me . I have bought a Canon 70-200 mkII. I will tell you how it works when I will receive it. π
PARIS-14 Posted December 14, 2018 Author Share #7 Β Posted December 14, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello to all. The Tamron was sent back and I have been refunded! Great and comprehensive individual seller! I just received and tried the Canon 70-200 f2.8 MKII and globally everything works fine! Except that sometimes it does not want to focus or it agrees to do so but, while in Manual mode, changes the camera shutter speed (?) and/or freezes it ...?????. The only way to have it work again is to pull the battery, the on /off button remaining inoperative! Very strange... This might be due to the Novoflex ring sending wrong info to the camera. A live test will surely be more instructive.Β
