The boy blinked.

1/90 caught the part of the blink. also the eye moved, probably due to a blink...

His right eye(left on the picture) is sharper than a hand.

I agree, you don't know how many people/children blink or move their eyes, which is a certain certain tension in the portraittee waiting for the click

Hi Marko,

The eye was not blinking, and look at the details of the hand, it is sharper then his eyes, anyways thanks for your response.

Simple fact is the lens you have is off. I know I have at least 3 lenses that are off.

Here is a shot from my 75 Cron at 9 feet from subject. I am focusing on the line at the 24" mark.

The second is with my 50 Cron. 75 Cron back focuses and get worse as the distances get greater and the 50 Cron front focuses as the distance get greater. I see the same FF with a Tele-Elmarit 90. So I know it's not the camera. And by the way it happens on both my M8 bodies.

I'm about ready to send off the black M8 and the 50/75/90 and have them fixed to each other and use the chrome M8 for just the wide lenses. I suspect the wide Leica lenses are also off but because of the greater DOF you don't notice it that much. About the only lens I amd truely happy with is a 21mm Skopar CV. Who would think that a lens that cost 1/8 the cost of a Leica lens, almost any leica lens, would be so good.

Hi Ed,

Thank you for your comments, I do this weekend some test and let see what the results are, I have check yesterday also my 90 mm and when my first M8 came back after adjusting the viewfinder, the pictures are sharper then with this new M8.

I keep you updated with this.

Good luck Theo. My Black M8 and the 3 lenses will be going to Leica NJ tomorrow. I just did a bunch of tests in the real world with all three lenses on my Chrome M8 and the results are the same as with the black and all the other tests I've done.

What tipped me off to this was a few shots I took at a outdoor bigband/orchestra concert with great light. I was stopped down to f/4 at a speed of about 750+ and focuses on the face of one of the players. When I got home latter that evening, 4th of July, and looked at the images the guy behind and 1 row back was in focus and the one player I focused on was totally blurry. I took at least 3 shots of him from slightly different angles and KNOW I had his face completely lined up in the rangefinder patch and none of them are anywhere near sharp.

I am, at this time, a bit disgusted with the whole M8 experience. Almost to the point of selling both M8's and my longer Leica lenses and go back to my Nikon gear and a Leica M3 for film.

Now I will have to wait 2-3-4 month before I can use any of those lenses and more then likely I will only be able to use them on one body. SICK SICK of it.

Looking at the boy's pose, it seems to me that the hand would be further away than his eyes. You appear to be shooting down from slight angle, and he's looking up - so geometry woudl suggest his hand is further away from the camera than his eyes. I'm guessing what you are seeing is what I have observed with my 50 lux asph - that it backfocuses about 1" at 'head-shot' distance.

I have also noticed that the M8 is much less forgiving of slight camera shake than film, I try to shoot around 1/250 with my lens to avoid that.

Hello David,

Thanks for your comments.

I have the same thoughts about it regarding that focus problem an YES the slight shake can be a problem with the M8.

I did some shots this morning on tripod an studio lights and it is much sharper.

Have to do still more tests with it.

I know the answer to your problem.

You suffered from camera shake during your exposure. 1/90 sec is slow enough to easily show blurr from camera shake. I work for a major International photo agency and have edited and uploaded nearly 20,000 images to the site. I know camera shake when I see it.

Keep shooting, and get those shutter speeds up, one way or another, up the ISO or open the aperture.Enjoy the fine lens.
