Hi all,

I just bought an epson perfection 4990 photo to scan all my negatives, mainly b/w.

I'm scanning in professional mode. What would the best resolution be? 24 or 48-bit color or 16-bit grayscale? I need then prints about 10x12 inch and also use them on the internet on my website i'm planning.

thanks,

Davide.

These should all be fine:600,1200, & 2400dpi at output print size 10 x 12. How big of a digital file do you want for each image? They take up sapace so you don't need more than this.

david hi....

i think majority of my images on my website are sanned from film with epson perfection 4990photo.........

i use the silverfast software ......... a must to make nice accaptable scans i think......

about printing that big (from 35mm scans rite).......... man, im not sure if epson is capable to make it.... or lets say - it is very much on the edge of what can be done with it....... i mean for demanding stuff (like pro work for publication or surely not exhibition stuff)... about 8x10" prints to a4 is ok as good proof prints if well scanned and post processed....... but for more than that i would suggest using a good pro scanning service for your selected works when u need to make a good print from them.........

ah forgot to mention .......... all of them as far as i remember are scanned processed with silverfast and no more retouched..... so they very much first files without addiotnal post processing ........

and surely for interent it is very capable......... and reflective material can be very well printed as well ......

I guess that depends to some extent on what film (say PanF or TMX) you are scanning. And what your personal taste is. Invest some time in testing what YOU like best before scanning great masses of negatives.

Have fun scanning. Hard to imagine though.

Chris
