Photoskeptic Posted July 16, 2007 Share #1 Posted July 16, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Since these are scarce as hens teeth and none of my normal suppliers have a clue as to when they will be available, I need a 28 or something close pdq. Suggestions? Experiences? Thanks for all replies.

stunsworth Posted July 16, 2007 Share #3 Posted July 16, 2007 But be quick, it's just been discontinued. Or spend the extra and get the 28mm Summicron.

geoff Posted July 16, 2007 Share #5 Posted July 16, 2007 After working with 21mm, 24mm, 35mm and 50mm lenses it seems the 28mm FOV (37.24mm) on the M8 is fast becoming my mainstay for grab-and-run, single lens, street work. I should have grabbed a Leica Elmarit-M 28mm f/2.8 ASPH when they were briefly available at B&H the other month. However, my mind wasn’t quite made up and I missed out. Asides from the specific focal length, I wanted a small and light solution for carrying around on my daytime walking excursions. As such, I settled on the Cosina Voigtlander Color-Skopar 28mm F3.5 along with a John Milich LTM8 9cm adapter and Leica Filter E39 UV/IR. Additionally, I got the LH-2 lens hood rather than the LH-1 to use on the Color-Skopar 28mm since it does not interfere with the FOV on the M8 and provides for much better shading. Altogether, the combined cost was about USD$580.ºº. Not bad at all for a super sharp lens, and less than a grand for a similar solution based on the Leica Elmarit-M 28mm f/2.8 ASPH. Geoff www.myspace.com/geoffotos There you go Geoff, I was just going to say that. Some years from now people are going to realize what a good lens that is and by then they'll be scarce as hens teeth. If one's budget allows I'd buy either the 28 Summicron or both the 28 Ultron and 28 Skopar. I'll also put in a plug for Stephen Gandy at CameraQuest Home Were it not for him, most of the CV lens reviews I've done would not have been written. He also sponsors RFF and has a great collection of information on his site. Cheers, Sean
Jamie Roberts Posted July 16, 2007 Share #7 Posted July 16, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Another vote for the 28 1.9 CV if size is ok, and for Stephen Gandy, too, for that matter! Great lens.
sean_reid Posted July 16, 2007 Share #8 Posted July 16, 2007 See the beauty of having both 28 CVs is the big one can be used when the speed is needed and the little one used when the speed isn't needed. Of course, they also vary in contrast. Cheers, Sean
forbar Posted July 16, 2007 Share #9 Posted July 16, 2007 B & H has the 28, 2.0 as of this minute. My refresh button can now go on vacation! Good luck in your search. Barbara
Jager Posted July 16, 2007 Share #10 Posted July 16, 2007 I was in the same boat, John, after acquiring my M8 in early January. I knew all along I'd need to buy a 28 to restore the 35mm FOV which had become my mainstay on my M7. And I figured with the new 28/2.8 I'd be golden. Alas, none were to be found. After much internal debate (easier done with a glass of Lagavulin!) I finally just sucked it up and bought the 28 Cron. In retrospect, I'm glad I was "forced" into that decision. The 28 Cron is a spectacular lens. It, along with the 50 Lux ASPH I bought (and another "didn't expect to get that" purchase) have become far and away my two most-favored lenses on the M8. Photoskeptic Posted July 16, 2007 Author Share #11 Posted July 16, 2007 Thanks for all the replies. The 28 'cron is legendary, IMO so is the price. The new 28 ASPH is $1500 which is fine with me, but whoopee thrill when there aren't any. I think Sean's idea is best. I don't like the idea of a 3.5 lens but it would work during the day. I could switch to the 1.9 for indoor, evening and night shots. But the 1.9 sorta kills the idea of a small, light kit. the 3.5 double appeals because it uses a 39 filter, which I already have (works great on the 15, BTW). I'll make a decision in the morning and place an order. Once again, thanks for all the input.
Guest guy_mancuso Posted July 17, 2007 Share #12 Posted July 17, 2007 Okay my semi rational decision on the 28 cron when I first got the M8. I decided that the 28mm was most likely the prime lens on the M8 it would be the lens cap , this was my decision before i bought it because the frame lines are the best for the 28mm i can see with the magnifier on all the time the frame lines so i decided it also need to be the fastest because it is the fastest wide angle Leica lens. So i decided to just go for it and and buy a new one and it turns out that i was right the 28 cron does sit on the body more than anything else and the images from it are superb and i do like the speed from this lens and I can hand hold it at very low speeds. I really cannotrecommend this lens enough on the M8. Now i have not shot the CV 28mm Ultron but from reports it does sound great and a lot cheaper but i don't regret buying the 28 cron for a milisecond

timswan Posted July 17, 2007 Share #14 Posted July 17, 2007 I recently bought the Cosina Voigtlander Color-Skopar 28mm F3.5 from Cameraquest and I'm seriously considering cancelling my backordered 28 Elmarit 2.8 ASPH -- the CV is a very, very nice lends. Very sharp, great color rendition, minimal vignetting, great build quality, and decent bokeh, if a little "electric" or "jangly" for lack of better words. The only thing that the Elmarit would better this on is 1/2 a stop, marginally better bokeh, and better build quality. Then again, owning the Elmarit and the CV would constantly cause the dreaded "which lens do I use sort of questions." I love this lens.
Guest Walt Posted July 17, 2007 Share #15 Posted July 17, 2007 Does anyone know if the CV 28/3.5 has been discontinued because they are about to come out with the lens in an M mount? (And yes, I know that this will not allow the Millich coding that the screw mount allows.) They did this with the 25/4.0 (and added rangefinder coupling to boot). Thanks, Walt
russell Posted July 17, 2007 Share #16 Posted July 17, 2007 I have the black Ultron. Yes, it is a bit big, but weight is not a concern. Build seems to be decent as well. I bought it in HK so I could check it on my M8. The silver one they had wasnt focusing correctly. The black one was spot on so the wallet came out... Havent use it too much yet, but so far I like it quite a bit.

Thanks, Walt Hi Walt, I'm told that it was discontinued because it hasn't sold well. Might they reintroduce it in some form? Maybe, maybe not... As you mention, however, the LTM version allows the LT-M8 adapter to be used and I think that's a significant asset. Cheers, Sean
