Warning to those of us using a general 49mm filter inserted into the 12504 hood: it will cause vignetting and smearing in the far corners at infinity. Not sure if this affects any other version of the pre-ASPH other than the v2, which I have, but I would assume so.

A visual as to why below. The correct Series VII filters (left) only have a very narrow outer band holding the glass, while most all 49mm filters have a wide inner band. This wider band is just enough to protrude into the light path.

100% zoom to the top left corner of an image taken with and without the B+W filter (same result in all four corners). I moved the camera between shots, so ignore the clouds changing position. Ignore the camera-estimated aperture in the EXIF – the same f-stop of f/5.6 was used for both shots in order to reduce vignetting from the lens itself.

This thread is making me want to pull the trigger on a late v2 German copy. I tested 1 German copy (not the same as the one I'm eyeing) side by side with a Canada one and I was surprised to see the central sharpness of the German one to be higher than the Canada one. I didn't test sharpness in the corners or stopped down.

I tried to find this info on the web but couldn't find it - does anyone know the weight of the lens with a hood and filter? Also, is focus shift an issue with this lens?

I plan to use it wide open but would stop it down readily as there's no size penalty disadvantage if I do so. I took a while to find a late-ish German copy (serial number 35xxx onwards, though I'm not sure when they became "sharp" due to tweaks in coatings or whatever they did so i figured just to look out for those at the end of production)..it was almost as if the titanium ones are easier to find...but not as easy on the wallet. I prefer a black lens but I do see the appeal of the titanium version. Whatever is cheaper is the one for me - either way I wish I picked one of these lenses up earlier!

Totally in the same place and a little tortured about an 80’s black Canadian one vs. a 90’s Titanium German one.  Both are now really expensive (thanks to this thread? 😅)… and they’re both appealing for different reasons.  Appreciate everyone here posting thoughts and images.  Any further “if I could only have one” insight would be appreciated, too.  Thanks, everyone.

Finding a reasonably priced late-German copy (mine was from 1991) was a challenge. I ended up finding one in very good condition in London for slightly over $3,000 (the strength of the dollar helped). It was shipped by DHL to me in the Bay Area.

I concur with the comments above. My copy glows a little wide open but is overall pretty sharp considering the lens.

Condition is more important than German or Canada. Go with the better one.

I have a crystal clear Canada version and I am really happy with it. I bought this lens for its unique character at f1.4 and f2 and it delivers. From the comments above, the German version may have less of it so it clearly is not for me.

In any case, I’d be surprised if anyone can guess between the two versions on a blind test… This is just my opinion 😉

Does anyone know if the Leica ITDOO hood will vignette on the V2?

Can someone tell me more about this filter for the v1? Ye sold it to me but I didn’t come across any examples of it online.

Looks like a standard filter. Maybe odd sizes to not have the outer engraving? I’d suggest to post in the ‘historica’ section. You may have more replies there…
