Berwick St, Soho again. This newsagent, directly opposite the Blue Posts pub shown in the post above, is in shade late afternoon but briefly lit up as light is reflected off the modern glass buildings opposite.

You got another of my old haunts there Robbie!

The Series 2 illegally parked on the double yellow lines could well of been mine too, ( especially parked like that ), it took another few decades to lose my Landrover obsession that begun in the late 60's lasted well into this century.

The four people in the back of the Land Rover were having a party, and why not.

Seems yesterday's theme for me was sunlight and shadows.

I started work in this game in the Covent Garden area in a studio / processing lab on Southhampton Street in a building that was home to many IPC magazines, like Country Life, Womans Own etc etc.............Covent Garden was still the veggie market at that time too,

So I knew that pub only too well back in the day, the Lazenby Court back alley entrance came in handy more than once when someone you wanted to avoid came in the Pub's Rose Street's front doors...........They also had what was perhaps London's most dangerous dartboard, it was tucked into a corner by the door of the Ladies and a few times a dart hit the opening door instead of the board, I think that counted as a "double top ".

Thanks for the memories Philip!.......

Small World, Smudgerer, and thanks for sharing your reminisences!

My first full-time job as an assistant was working for a different 'Smudger' who had a basement studio in West Central Street which was just to the south off New Oxford Street heading down towards 'The Market' so the Lamb and Flag has been to the forefront of my 'List of Acquaintances' since 1988...

As to Robbie's pics of the Berwick Street 'The Blue Posts'(*). The foremost professional film-labs in central London right up until the digital era were Ceta and Metro. Both had premises in Poland Street (next street across to the east) so every assistant I knew would frequently be found to be having lunch in one of the SoHo pubs whilst that mornings clip-tests were being processed. As such I am quite at my ease in these (very) old haunts!

Furthermore every Friday evening a group of we assistants and our other-halves would assemble in the 'John Snow' just along the road. Most weeks we would number a dozen or moreand I am still great friends with people encountered during those times.  VERY Happy days!

Philip.

EDIT : Forgot to say that there are (at least) another four pubs within short(-ish) walking distance of the one in Berwick Street which are also named 'The Blue Posts'. Needless to be said there are many (and some fanciful) notions with regard to the origin of the name. 'Early Form of a Police-Protected Area' is one; 'Hansom Cab / Taxi Rank' another...take your pick!

very dreamy Costa, bravo !

Thanks G. I've also been using it at f11 a fair bit on my film M but it's nice to have the option of f1.4 in sunny conditions on digital.  It's so bright here that even 100 speed film is a struggle at wider apertures without an ND. What's a bigger struggle is finding somewhere local in Greece to develop the rolls!

Still on the Lamb and Flag thing, but after this I’ll shut up…...

Back in the early 2000’s we were doing a 10 day shoot at Shepperton Studios, coming over from the US with my key crew, producer and the clients, although we were working at Shepperton we stayed in town at the Covent Garden Hotel on Monmouth Street, not too much of a hop skip and a jump from the Lamb and Flag, as you well know.

So being back in my old element I took everyone to the “Lamb” the first few nights after dinners at Rules or The Vine, ( yes we had a healthy expense account on that shoot ), and always approaching the pub via Garrick and Rose Streets, the front entrance.

After a few nights there, which I enjoyed, the America clients got bored with the tiny pub and asked if we could go somewhere else next time…….Sure, not a problem, said I.

The next evening I led everyone south from the hotel on Monmouth, dove into Lazenby Court and into the Lamb’s side door, it was packed but everyone was happy with the “new” pub until four rounds in my clients realised they were back in the same pub again, but by then, four pints in, who cares.

Loved that pub.

To me, f/2 in sunshine means slightly overexposed. But I like the film-like effect it gives to the brightest areas.
