Stuart Richardson Posted June 10, 2023 Share #171 Posted June 10, 2023 (edited) Was woken up this morning by the weird gurgling sounds of a ptarmigan. I later found them outside sitting on a branch eating buds. They stayed there for more than an hour, and allowed me to get pretty close. I did not want to bother it, so I did not try to get any closer than I did, but with the 90-280 at 280, it still allowed me to get in close. This is uncropped, other than aspect ratio. If you are curious to hear their weird sounds, you can listen here. What I heard was the display call. https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Rock_Ptarmigan/sounds Welcome, dear visitor! This is a 100% crop of the head, after using enhance details and super resolution. The lens is quite fantastic at this work, and great that there is no fringing either, as the bird was backlit with an overcast sky behind it, with the branches as well. I think most telephoto zooms would struggle with chromatic aberration in these conditions. I should add that it was handheld too, so lots of thanks to the stabilization! Ken Abrahams Posted June 13, 2023 Share #172 Posted June 13, 2023 Boodalang Waarnk (Pelican Stories) SL2 with 90-280 at 280 Recently have joined Bird Photography pages and noticed how the sharpest and very close up images seem to be a standard goal for most photographers. Well, sharp is good in any situation however closely cropped images tend to be unimaginative and lacking any "story" going on. Stuart's images above might highlight what I am saying. I really like the first image showing the birds natural perch but the 100% crop or images like them prove nothing except for the fact that a particular lens is super sharp or the person knows how to use Topaz AI. So I thought it must be a "norm" or an unspoken standard to get very close and or crop closely to the subject as these are the most liked type of images on social media. Shooting "small in the frame" allows me to add the landscape element and place the bird into the context of nature. Welcome, dear visitor! Ken Abrahams Posted June 17, 2023 Share #174 Posted June 17, 2023 Ibis in a Tree - Not the most enjoyed bird in the animal kingdom but at least it has a name that refers to a camera function. Was there a reason you used the VE 90-280? Not the ideal choice of lens for such work although you have used it very well indeed. I love the lens as many others do and could easily understand why one would want to use it for every occasion. Best Ken

Best Ken I would say that those are the most artistic of the photos I shot of the evening. Most were pretty standard groups and the tele was a great option for the speeches that were given at the event, so I could get close ups from the back of the room. I enjoy the range for event work more than a 70-200 and love it's design in my hand. Thanks autofocus for me is now up to reliable standard with the S5 IIx, and hopefully a future SL3. I had the Leica 24-90 to complement it. Here are two shots at 280mm. Welcome, dear visitor!
