ShutterLIVING Posted August 2, 2018 Share #1 Posted August 2, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just bought my first piece of darkroom equipment. (Well after my M6) ...the Leitz 4 bladed 10x12 (or 30x24) easel. It came from ebay and i paid £125. I am very happy with the condition, looks almost never used HOWEVER.... The blades are not true is there a way to adjust them? Does any of you use one? Any help welcome. Happy to send photos if that would help. jpattison Posted October 17, 2018 Share #4 Posted October 17, 2018 Hi, Just spotted this post. I have this version of the 10x12 Leitz easel. I tape the blades into a fixed position, having determined the format on the day. Hope this helps, Best Wishes, John
105012 Posted October 18, 2018 Share #5 Posted October 18, 2018 Hi, I also have this easel. I've not noticed any issues with mine, blades all seem to meet at 90 degrees...
ShutterLIVING Posted October 18, 2018 Author Share #6 Posted October 18, 2018 Thanks John, A simple and elegant solution. (One that I will indeed resort too). When I got the easel I assumed being Leitz it would be well made (which it is) I did not consider it could having wonky blades. Does anyone know anyone who specializes in these things, there are some nuts and blots that I could twist but I dont want to make the problem worse? 105012 - I think you are lucky I did some googling and it seems this is not an isolated instance. Anyone know or can suggest an easel that is better made than the Leica. (never thought I would be saying that) Very best Jamie of ShutterLIVING.com
jpattison Posted October 18, 2018 Share #7 Posted October 18, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) My larger Kostiner 14'x14" is very good, but it too needs a little tape to ensure the blades are perfectly square (90deg) to each other. Same with the Saunders 11"x14" which I sold last year. The Leitz ones are very well made, the blades are attached to the slide control on one end, this is the potential cause of the problem. Find one that clamps both ends of the blades to ensure perfection! Two Blade easels are easier to keep square, as 2 sides are fixed! But they are not as versatile. Martin B Posted November 7, 2018 Share #8 Posted November 7, 2018 I bought my first 14x17" LPL 4-bladed easel when I set up my first darkroom in 2015 - bought it online for about $100. I am very surprised to see how expensive used easels are sold for now. I was fortunate enough last year to buy for a very good deal a nearly mint large darkroom setup which included a whole set of easels - even an industrial style super large one which doesn't even fit in my darkroom (no idea how much this one could be sold for - you can't find it online anywhere!). The size I feel most comfortable using is the 14x17" size since it fits the largest format I am using for prints (11x14").
