Japanese market M8s?

Hi,

Are there any forum members who have bought their M8 in Japan? I have the opportunity to buy a Japanese market M8 at a good price, but I have some worries:

Does it come with a full international warranty or is it valid in Japan only?

Is it eligible for the 2 free IR filters offer?

Are the manuals and software multi-lingual or Japanese only?

Thanks in advance,

Nick Yoon

Hi Nick.

I live in Japan, and puchased my M8 here.

In answer to your questions ...

1. The standard Leica 2-year warrantly card is included in the package (in German, English, and French).

2. The 2-free-filters deal applies. The form included with my M8 was in Japanese, however, and was sent to Leica Japan. You might want to check this out, but you can also register the camera online and order your filters that way.

3. The German/English manual is included, along with a separate Japanese manual. The software runs in English on my Mac.

Of course that's just my personal experience, so no guarantees. For more reliable info you should probably contact Leica directly.

Cheers,

Kent.

Bill and Kent, thanks for the information. I've found more information from my supplier. Unfortunately, since he's not an authorized dealer it seems I would have to return the camera to him in Japan if there were any warranty issues. The authorized dealer who supplies him is not willing to have their name identified on the receipt.

The best deal I found (on the web) from a non authorized dealer in Japan is 498000 Yen, roughly 4080 USD. But consider the quirks and bugs in the M8, none of these undercut prices are worth the risks IMHO.

Even with reputable dealers, it seems little cheaper there. Yodobashi has it for Y548000 (which comes to 4477, their online price).

Yodobashi members will enjoy another 13% discount ... turns out to be around 3900 USD, that's below the price from some non-authorized dealers who are willing to ship overseas.

When I bought mine, it was 10% (8% if you paid by credit card), but you don't actually get that amount discounted from the price. Instead you get points that you can use for the purchase of something else. It's a good deal if you buy a lot of stuff from Yodobashi, like some of us do.

Yodobashi ... yup, that's where I bought my M8, for ¥548,000 as mentioned by trs above. The 10% point "rebate" went towards a Zeiss Biogon 35/2. All in all a pretty good deal.

I was in Melbourne, Australia (which is where I'm originally from) just a couple of weeks after buying the M8 in Japan, and was shocked to find that the price there was around A$6,999, which at the going exchange rate was more than ¥150,000 higher (equivalent to about US$1,230 higher) than what I had paid. Lenses were expensive in Melbourne, too.

It seems as though Leica tries to set equivalent prices worldwide, but fluctuating exchange rates play havoc with that idea.

Cheers,

Kent.
