Can you change the view in the magnification screen?

I have wondered for a while about this. When I use manual focus, the magnification screen kicks in. However it only shows part of the frame and quite often it is not the part I want to focus on. Is there a way of changing the magnification screen to the area that I actually want to magnify? I hope this makes sense.

Unfortunately and I really mean UNFORTUNATELY, you cannot. This is one of several annoying “characteristics” of the Q that I’ve found. Not as good as my Canon 5D3 for Macro work. I’ve complained about this in the past and also not having a cable release, but Its not made it to the Leica firmware upgrade list.

That is an absolute shame as it limits the manual focus mode quite a bit. One would think that by moving the focus point the camera would move the magnification area automatically. Such a shame.

I might not understand your question/concern properly. While in magnification mode, the mode remains on when you move the focus point to an area of interest that you want to refocus.

Please elaborate on how to move the focus point when in manual focus. I cannot see how to do it. Certainly I can move the focus point in AF mode. Can’t see how to do it in manual magnified. Thanks.

My bad, I realized the ambiguity when I said “moving the focus point”. What I meant was moving the camera (i.e., recomposing). You’re right, the screen (and EVF) does not show the focus point in MF mode.

Thanks. I was hoping that I had missed some way to move the focus point. It would be fantastic if one could.

So can I check just in case I am missing something: If I want to focus on the left corner of the frame but the magnification area shows only the centre of the picture, can I move the camera so that the magnification screen shows the left corner, focus on that, and whilst keeping the button half pressed I refocus on the original frame and press button fully. Does that mean that the area with the focus will still be the left hand corner?

Not sure I’m following ypur question. Sorry. My experience is you can only move the focus area when in AF. In manual focus it magnifies the center of the view for a few seconds while you are moving the focus control. Then it reverts back to the full view. There is no moving the focus area in manual focus.

Sorry, I'm not managing to explain myself properly. What I mean is, if I place the area I want to focus in the centre and then focus on it then press the shutter half way down and keep it pressed does the focus lock onto that area? So that I can then reframe whilst keeping the shutter releasse half way down and press it fully once I have reframed? Not sure if that makes sense?

That makes perfect sense and I believe it works as you describe. For me however that is problematic when you’re highly magnified taking macro shots. I don’t want to move the camera at all. The bug may fly away or the focus may not be exactjy where I want it once I reposition.

I agree with you on that one. It is very annoying. Hence why in most of my macro pictures the object tends to be central. I hope Leica adresses this issue at some point.
