Filter: E55 vs 55mm

Can any 55mm filter thread work in an E55 filter ring?

I ask because I have all series VII lenses, no filters, and would like to use standard 55mm filters (requires step rings), because I don't have the hoods/retaining rings, and step rings are cheap.

Can I use E55 leica filters?

if I get leica lenses that use E55, can I use standard filters on them?

if not, is there a conversion ring between E55 & 55mm?

Thank you for your time

E55 usually refers to the typical 55 mm filter thread. E probably stands for the German term Einschraubfilter (screw in filter). The opposite would be a stack on or Aufsteckfilter. The E basicllay tells you that the 55 screws in. The thread for all 55 mm filter is standardized.
