I neither consider it a bug or not a bug ... It's simply irrelevant. The camera counts the files it makes the way it was programmed to. If that doesn't suit my needs, the number of tools available to rename a sequence of files to any specification I choose is enormous and do a good job.

It's not like the camera spits out file numbers at random, which would definitely be a bug. It just doesn't run numbers from 0000 to 9999; it runs numbers rom 0000 to 0999, and then moves to a new folder. This is hardly catastrophic or a bug...

Absolutely: a non-issue for me these last eight years. Overall I would characterise the CL firmware as quirky and sometimes inscrutable (mostly wrt the Menu system), but in general it seems to work ok when one gets to grips with it. A much more significant issue mentioned by some above is that firmware upgrades overwrite one’s settings. A bit like the way Photoshop used to lose all user-installed plugins and when you installed a major upgrade. That got fixed. Hopefully one of these days firmware upgrades will also be able to incorporate user-input stuff

Honestly, it makes no sense whatsoever to have your file numbering go from L1090999 and L1091000 to L1100001...

Is the sky falling down?  Probably not.

Would I like to have it changed?  Absolutely.

Is it worse that it completely gets re-set with firmware upgrades?  Yes.

Agree that it is doing what it was programmed to do.  Not a huge issue, but still needing a workaround for some individuals' workflow.  That said, I know I'll manage, but it's good to know that it's not something that I've just imagined and that others have encountered it.  But then, I adapted to using IR cut filters, too, with the M8.

The camera works as designed so it’s not a bug. While many cameras start a new folder only after reaching image number 9999, some do so after 999. Leica’s and Fujifilm’s cameras only count to 999, for example.
