Mine are self-coded using a Dreml, I only milled the pits for black codes, and they aren't exactly shaped like Leica's.  I used Testor's flat black model car paint.   In fact on my 35 Cron which has 2 adjacent black pits right where a screw is I milled one double-wide pit surrounding the screw and painted it all.  On my 21 Elmarit there's a screw which the reader "sees" as a black pit, so I painted it with Testor's flat white.  They all worked fine on M8, M9 and now M240.  So I think the paint has more to do with it than the shape or depth of the pits (as long as the pits are properly aligned).

Coding doesn't have any effect when shooting in RAW - which is all I use.  I turned off lens detection a few months into M9 & now with the 240 - never looked back

 

The rare times I have issues like CA, Photoshop does a fine job

 

I don't think this is strictly true. I have tried coding my CV lenses and never been able to get it to work. But if I manually select the wrong lens profile for my CV 21mm f4, I'll get purple fringing in RAW, if I select the correct profile for the lens - in camera, there is no purple fringing when importing the RAW file to Lightroom.

I know some of you have had great results with them, but mine have been nothing but frustrating. I'm going to order proper 

Leica flanges from Leica USA. $225 each that are pre-coded or $300 if they install...but a three month wait for them to install it.

 

That's quite expensive!!!! I had my Summilux 35/1.4 Asph and my Elmarit 90/2 6bit coded at Will Van Manen for less the cost of one Leica flange. And they work like charm. I'm sure somebody can do the same in the States at a favorable price.

First time adapter just filled in the black with a Sharpie and works perfectly.

 

Second adapter on a different lens have painted both black and white but not recognised. I‘ll see if I can make sure I use matt paints for my next attempt

I've used a Jinfinance adaptor on a Leica Elmarit-M 1:2.8/90mm, painted both the white & black pits with matt paints, and it works perfectly. It took a few shots to get the paint right, but all good now.

Does anyone know if Jinfinance make adaptors for the following two collapsible Leica lenses:

• Leica Elmar-M 1:2.8/50mm
• Leica Macro-Elmar-M 1:4/90mm

If so, any information you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

I'm running Jinfinace flanges on a 90mm Elmarit M and a 50mm summicron and they both work fine on my M240. I guess I must have been lucky. I daubed the paint into the pits with a cocktail stick and cleaned off any surplus with a scalpel blade afterwards. I used some white emulsion I had laying around (matte) and some VHT black paint I had in the garage (also matte). 

At $12 for the 50mm and $9 for the 90mm, I've saved about $579.00 had I sent the two off to Leica for coding.

Small update: the other day I took my 50mm Summicron out and was using it quite a bit but regularly swapping between it and two other lenses. Something I don’t normally do. I noticed (later) that the 50 wasn’t being registered. On inspection, one of the white recesses in the coding area had lost its paint and was basically showing silver. Using the same process above, i fixed the coding with some white paint and a cocktail stick. It’s now working fine again with no problems. Not sure if the paint fell out during the day or at some other time. No sign of it in the camera (first place to inspected) or in any of the lens caps.

My 240 will not recognize it ever, but my M9 always will. The pits are full, perfectly flat and are nice and clean and very matt.

 

Frustrating. But it's not that big a deal when I think about it, because a switch to that lens also involves removing my Thumbs Up

grip (when using my EVF) or adding the 21 Leica finder to my Thumbs Up...so I guess a manual programming isn't that big a deal.

 

Just hate to give up.

You might want to glue a shoe on top of your thumbs up, or do something like this
