Another weekend, another British seaside resort.

When I was a kid I used to be taken by my grandparents for a week in Rhyl every summer. It's a place that has seen better days, or perhaps I just see my childhood visits there through rose coloured spectacles.

Your memory is correct Rhyl has seen better days. I went there 2 years ago and was staggered at how run down it has become. Like you Steve I have fond childhood memories of the place which were somewhat shattered.

A few years ago Rhyl (and several other Welsh seaside towns such as Barmouth and Fairbourne) gained the unenviable title of 'DSS* on Sea' thanks to the large number of out-of-work layabouts they attracted as long-term residents in run-down boarding houses. I don't think that Rhyl has recovered much since then.

*For non-Brits, DSS = Department of Social Security = the dole!
