stunsworth Posted August 6, 2006 Share #1 Posted August 6, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Another weekend, another British seaside resort. When I was a kid I used to be taken by my grandparents for a week in Rhyl every summer. It's a place that has seen better days, or perhaps I just see my childhood visits there through rose coloured spectacles. Advertisement Posted August 6, 2006 Posted August 6, 2006 Hi stunsworth, Take a look here Lunchtime in Rhyl. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
andybarton Posted August 6, 2006 Share #2 Posted August 6, 2006 If it's anything like Point of Aire, where we were this afternoon, it's a bit "grim".
stunsworth Posted August 6, 2006 Author Share #3 Posted August 6, 2006 Andy, it started out ok, but quickly covered over with cloud, later there was a bit of rain - see the 'Bangor' shot I'm about to post.
moikle Posted August 7, 2006 Share #4 Posted August 7, 2006 Your memory is correct Rhyl has seen better days. I went there 2 years ago and was staggered at how run down it has become. Like you Steve I have fond childhood memories of the place which were somewhat shattered. Mike

Canon 5D, 28mm Elmarit A few years ago Rhyl (and several other Welsh seaside towns such as Barmouth and Fairbourne) gained the unenviable title of 'DSS* on Sea' thanks to the large number of out-of-work layabouts they attracted as long-term residents in run-down boarding houses. I don't think that Rhyl has recovered much since then. *For non-Brits, DSS = Department of Social Security = the dole!
andybarton Posted August 7, 2006 Share #6 Posted August 7, 2006 People on the dole have to live somewhere... And not all of them are layabouts.
