Would you send this M8 back?

I received an M8 2 days ago and got to play with it yesterday. Last night it shut down, presumably from the battery being discharged (this happened as I was trying out "C" mode and ran off 10 frames ).

I recharged the battery and the indicator showed only 2 bars. I put the battery in the charger over night - still just 2 bars.

I am pretty sure the dealer will take it back - since this is an out of the box problem. Any other suggestions?

Thanks

Gary

Do you have a second battery to try? Otherwise I'd go and see my dealer and check things out with them, just to check that you are not doing anything silly but not obvious to you.

I would contact the dealer and see what he says about bring it back and getting another camera on the spot. But until you can do that, since it's Sunday (Unless the dealer is open on Sunday), you could try running the battery down completely and then recharging it one more time. Running the battery down in the camera will reset both the battery and the camera. If that doesn't work, IE you still only get 2 bars on the battery meter, then YES you need a new camera, or at least a NEW battery.

While you're at your dealer BUY at least ONE extra battery. The camera is totally useless without a charged battery.

Thanks for the advice - I do not have a second battery yet. I bought the camera online, so I'll have to send it in if I want to swap.

I'll try fully running the battery down to see what happens if I do a full recharge, but if that doesn't work, I'll probably return it since I don't know if this is something would would require a return to Leica and that's the last thing I care to do.

I think (based on some experience and a lot of online reading) the possibilities of a bad battery or charger are equal to the possibility of a bad camera and would explore them first.

I just had the same thing happen to me, IE having 2 bars on a battery I charged last night.

I was cleaning my sensor and figured I but a fresh battery in to do it with. I put a battery in that just came out of the charger this morning. After one cleaning session I look at the battery meter and it reads 2 bars. I put a another battery in, charged up a day or 2 ago, and it reads as full.

The battery that read 2 bars after a short period of use is a aftermarket, Impact, battery. I'm going to let it run down fully in my second M8 while I go out for some pic's.

So until you have a second battery you can't think it is the camera. It's more then likely the battery.

I had the exact problem early on with my M8. It was a bad battery. New battery worked perfectly and Leica replaced the old one. Good idea to have a second battery anyhow,

My experience is that I get best battery life - really more than adequate now + fewer complications by always completely exhausting the battery before re-charging. Easy enough to do with a bit of organising, and IMHO worth the effort.

Thanks - it is sounding more reasonable now. I did fully discharge the battery and recharge and it has the same problem. I am going to call the store and see if I can get a spare battery to test prior to sending it back.

Thanks all...

I bought a second battery (had to get it locally so I would have time for testing before my return privileges expired - geez the full retail price is somewhat on the insane side) and have tested it and the original several times, letting them fully expire before the 3 Hour charging cycle. And I am happy to say that the original battery is the only one that only shows 2 bars - the new one seem fine, so I assume the camera is ok.

Thanks again for the advice, all...

Discharging the battery every time hastens the demise of the battery, wearing it out. A Li-ion battery likes to be topped up occassionally but running it flat is not necessary, the sooner you can top her up the better each time.

The battery is 3.6V so that is only one cell, discharging and recharging is also not necessary since there are not multiple cells to be equalised which is something you should do every so often (not everytime) in multi cell packs such as the DMR.

I have been dealing with batteries for a long time and many misconceptions of battery maintenance have been dragged across from nickel batteries and multi cell packs to todays single cell lithium based cells. I see this in mobile phonoe and camera instructions, I'm sure there are other areas.

If you have a new multi cell pack (most cameras) then yes charge first time and fully discharge to equalise cell capacities and then do this every few months for the life of the battery.

If it is a single cell battery as in the M8 then cycling has no benefit.

Thanks Roberth, but an interesting thing happened - the battery that was causing me problems now appears to be holding a full charge after the charge discharge cycles.

But I am through with the fully discharge approach and will be "topping off" from this point forward.

Thanks

good that the battery came good. I have a very expensive piece of equipment that cycles and tests batteries. For lithium single cells I have not seen any increase by cycling from new. There is always the exception I guess.
