Alternative lens hoods for M8

Since the angle of view on the M8 is less than the angle of view on a film M due to the sensor size, it seems that this is an opportunity for use of smaller lens hoods on wide angle lenses so that the amount of ranefinder obstruction might be reduced.

I have tried buying a 39mm "normal" lens hood for use with the 35 cron, but I was disappointed since the threads were of poor quality and bound in the filter.

Has anyone discovered a source of quality lens hoods that better match the M8 for use with leica lenses?

Has anyone put together a list of tested lens/hood combinations?

thanks

Guy started a good thread on alternative hoods for the 35 Summilux. This shade is very large by comparison. One of the eBay vendors had 46mm Wide screw in metal hoods ..unfortunately they sold out quickly. The advantage sought was to block less of the viewfinder and have a solid mount (as the larger Leica hood has a tendancy to move about when pushed in a camera bag). They are used generally without caps. The only disadvantage is that if you drop the lens on the hood ..it will not collapse like the leica hood...so you will damage your lens(or at least you may get some protection from the hood with the leica version). Another alternative for the 46mm lenses ..the Contax G hoods are 46mm threaded metal hoods ..the GC-1 and GC-2 are alternatives for the 28mm Summicron and the 35 Summilux. These are more expensive because of their scarcity..running around $50-70 each on eBay. Copies are available for $10-15. I have been pretty happy with the Leica hoods for the 35 summicron. I agree that if you are after more effective shading that slightly longer hoods should be possible with the M8 .

Bob,

I am quite anal as well in trying to get the max lenshood on my lenses. I am using a lenshood made for Contax G 90mm Sonnar (I took that from my Contax G no longer used collection :D) on my 50mm Summilux ASPH and it works great. Yes, they share the same 46mm diameter and I really like the extra hooding to further minimize any residual glare under front lighting conditions. No vignetting at all on the 50mm lens! That hood might not be as effective on my 75mm Summicron but it is better than the built-in hood but you have to get an adapter for this as the diameter of the lens is 49mm.

I also bought a collapsible rubber lenshood for my Nocti but the diameter of that is too wide and it semi covers the viewfinder too much. I am thinking of cutting an opening but have don't so. I haven't looked into my wide angle lenses since they use rectangular hoods...

The hood for the 35 ASPH 'lux is a good replacement for the one that Leica supply for the 28 'cron. It fits perfectly (with no vignetting) and is a much neater size and shape than the ludicrous box-like thing that comes with the 28.

Anybody know how much and where in the US to get this hood?

Sean, Carsten,

There is a vented metal hood, 46mm on the auction site from Hong Kong, but it may be a bit deep for use with a 28. Might work for 35mm, though. At the price, it looks like it would be worth trying.

Another alternative would be the hoods for the Contax-G lenses, but they would not be vented. There have been some Chinese versions of these on line lately.

Sean, I believe that this is the one that Norman means:

eBay: New Metal 46mm Vented Lens Hood 50mm 35mm 1.4, Summilux (item 170128632925 end time Jul-12-07 21:44:56 PDT)

The hood Guy referred to in his previous thread is this one, but I think it is shallower, and probably doesn't give the best protection against flare:

eBay: New! Metal Wide Angle 46mm Screw-in Lens Hood (item 140046449068 end time Dec-31-06 05:00:45 PST)

Here is Guy's old thread:

That is a good idea!

The 28/2 hood is massive.

What about better options for the 35/2 or the 24/2.8?

thanks

Bob, for the 35/2 the 50/2.8 hood should work. They have the same diameter filter thread, and the focal length matches on the M8. It is a really nice little hood, a straight metal jobbie.

Sean:

Kenco made a vented 46mm hood a while back. (It might be spelled Kenko--don't have the camerra with me now). Used samples appear on the auction site now and then. I snagged one for my 35 Lux Asph recently. It looks very much like the first hood link Carsten posted above.

Another stopgap measure might be a couple of inexpensive filter thread adapters strung together, such as a 46 to 49 followed by a 49 to 46. I used that for a while when I was (I using a 49mm filter while waiting for the 46mm filter. Anything to avoid using the clunky hood Leica supplies.

For 39mm, look for vented hoods by the seller "Heavystar." Or the Hong Kong seller who makes a screw-in version of the Leitz-design clip-on 39mm hood. I think he refers to it as "beautiful," and it is. It has the reverse-cone design the Leitz hood, so it barely shows in the finder.

What do you use on your 50 Nokton? Right now I've got a 49mm filter, not 52, so I'm using a 52 - 49mm step-down ring and an Olympus OM hood that clips on to the filter nicely. No vignetting that I can see.
