I have a few projects that require triggering of the SL from a distance of a few tens of metres. Is this possible - either by cable or a remote controller? Can, for instance, the remote release cable RC-SCL4 be extended to, say, 20 m? The SL app will not work since the connection breaks down for a distance more than a few meters (if my memory serves me right).

(I know there are many options available for the usual suspects (Canikon & co), so if not possible with the SL, I may go for a Nikon).

Edit: After some searching, I found this thread (that I, in retrospect, remotely remember...).

There are Active Repeater USB cables that provide extension up to 30m or more.

I spent a lot of money on several of these after the SL came out trying to tether it to a laptop and avoid the 2-3m WiFi limit ...... but I could not get them to connect reliably, even with an auxiliary power source to the cable.

As the SL firmware has gone through a number of changes since then I suppose I should give it another go.

I see no reason why splicing 20m of wire into the existing remote should not work ...... but you have limited functionality.

First priority: To get something that can trigger the camera on, say 20-30 m distance (and I understand that you imagine this may work). Second priority: To get mixed in some additional functionality (and something a la the SL app would, obviously, be great!).

Nice pun, even if it wasn't remotely intended. Should be able to set this up with PocketWizards.

;) .

If someone knowing PocketWizard (or other remote controlling systems, Captur?) can provide a setup that may work - please feel free to chime in on this thread! I ask since I am not into this remote business. Yet...

It can't be that hard to build a little RF triggered switch, both a sender and receiver, and splice that into the Leica remote cable. I'm not an EE but I don't think the switch has any logic in it at all, so it's just a matter of taking the switch apart, determining how it works, and then putting a little box together with a couple of small solenoids that respond to a pair of RF signals to open and close the circuits as needed.

It does require the sacrifice of one $200 remote cable, otherwise I'd just take one apart and make a box... I don't have any need.

I'm doing this on my CL for remote triggering:

Leica CL connected to Leica CL app on my iPhone and triggered by bluetooth remote shutter (connected to iPhone).

Works a treat for me. Perhaps will work on Leica SL too.

I think the helged's concern was the range--20+ meters is out, and he mentioned that the app connection breaks down at those distances. I personally gave up on the app for now with the SL, as I found it unpredictable in terms of reliabiity.

Thought about this more than I should today. Can't get this to work for Pocketwizards without modifying the cable....

Need some help as a new SL owner (just got it 3 days ago) and I cannot for the life of me clearly figure out what remote triggers (or infrared if possible) will work with the SL? I use it also as a film negative scanner, and using the app for this sucks as I continuously have to take off and put on my gloves. I know, first world problems lol, but if I can get a remote or cable release that would be grand.

For this use could you not just shoot tethered into capture one or lightroom? That has worked for me in the past…

@Stuart Richardson hadn't thought about this actually and could be a solution. Though can I trigger the shutter via Lightroom in such a setup? As this is the main problem I'm trying to resolve haha.
