Cindy Flood Posted July 5, 2007 Share #1 Posted July 5, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I received my IR filter holder/hood from John Milich today. It is a beautiful piece of work. I really appreciate the work and good service that John has provided. I'm liking that little lens more and more. I can't wait to try it out with the hood on my M8. cometsoft Posted July 5, 2007 Share #4 Posted July 5, 2007 I was thinking of ordering one, but was having a bit of sticker shock at the $150. My 39mm IR filter fits in the CV15 very well with a bit of gaffers tape around it. Also has a small profile. I don't have a film Leica and always use the filter, so what's the advantage of the holder?
sisoje Posted July 6, 2007 Share #5 Posted July 6, 2007 Paid for mine last week. Still waiting.... I guess Toronto is a bit far from Brooklyn...
george + Posted July 6, 2007 Share #6 Posted July 6, 2007 Yes Steven, it takes some time to get through our customs/systems. And DHL is not known for their excellence in Canada.
george_b Posted July 6, 2007 Share #7 Posted July 6, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi John, do you have a DHL tracking number yet for my order so I can do an on-line query to check when mine could be expected in the UK please. I know getting through customs can be a pain and the UK has a heightened security level following recent events. It's just that I need to ensure someone will be around when expected. Ta. sean_reid Posted July 6, 2007 Share #8 Posted July 6, 2007 I was thinking of ordering one, but was having a bit of sticker shock at the $150. My 39mm IR filter fits in the CV15 very well with a bit of gaffers tape around it. Also has a small profile. I don't have a film Leica and always use the filter, so what's the advantage of the holder? The holder is more secure and, very importantly, it shades the lens + filter combination. They need as much shading as possible. We're used to buying a lot of well-made things that are mass produced in Asia. Limited production in a NYC shop is something quite different. I can report from my experience that the flare on this lens with the filter stuck in the opening is considerable. I took a not-very-usable pic this weekend with late-day lighting coming from the side. In comparison with the same shot taken with the 24mm with its filter and shade, the image is unacceptable. sisoje Posted July 6, 2007 Share #10 Posted July 6, 2007 I am expecting my adapter to arrive on Monday by DHL here in Toronto. One question still remains: since the filter is mounted reversed on the JM's adapter, do we need to reverse the glass it self in the filter's rim? If yes, what is the proper/correct/safe way to do this since E39 Leica filter does not have regular locking rim? Anybody did this already:confused:

If yes, what is the proper/correct/safe way to do this since E39 Leica filter does not have regular locking rim? Anybody did this already:confused: Steven, it is not necessary to reorient the glass when the filter is mounted backwards. Both the UV and the IR-cut coatings work equally well no matter which side of the glass faces forward. The UV coating is more durable than the other, so if your UV side was facing forward you might want to reverse the orientation. It's gonna be a pain in the butt and I for one don't plan to do this. The filter doesn't cost a million bucks, so if it gets scratched, I'll replace it. Most M users seem to be totally anal about their hardware, so the likelihood of a scratch is pretty small.
