Just a note to say my copy arrived here in the UK this morning.  I have only had time for a quick look, but what a book! Beautifully printed and bound with everything one would want to know about the early history of our cameras.

The English translation of Ulf Richter’s excellent book: Oskar Barnack – From the Idea to the Leica is now available as part of LHSA’s 50^th Anniversary celebration.

 

Ulf Richter spent years assembling the material to allow him to write this outstanding book on the life of Oskar Barnack and the development of The Camera that Revolutionized Photography.  Originally published in German in 2009, the book contains many photographs of the early Leica cameras, pictures associated with Barnack’s life, illustrations from Barnack’s workbooks, and detailed drawings of the camera mechanisms. The Appendix contains copies of selected patents and an extended selection of references.

 

After several years of work, LHSA has produced an excellent English translation.  The primary translator was Rolf Fricke, a former President of LHSA.

 

 The limited edition has sold out but the regular edition remains available to LHSA members at $49.99 and nonmembers at $59.95.
