Having seen the Tour several times whilst staying with the in-laws in France I have to say it is a disappointment photography wise. The build up and the arrival of the 'circus' is good for shooting but lets face it unless it's a circuit you have around 30 secs max to shoot anything.

I prefer watching it on TV not only for the race but for those great helo shots of the old villages, châteaux and landmarks. I always end up with a list of notes for future visits! :o

Same for me Andy.

It's a great travelogue regardless of how the cycling is going.

:)

Thanks.

As a former USCF Road Racer and one time USCF Official, at my level i never saw any drugs being taken, but if you are truly concerned about illegal drug use, just look around you at every level of any Sport these days, they ALL take performance enhanceing drugs. Look at your friends and co-workers because unless thier occupation requires Random Drug & Alcohol Testing, more than likely they are in the work place under the influence of some sort of drug, illegal or not.

Cycling for whatever reason and I haven't determined why yet, seems bent on destroying itself with the Governments and different Authorities bent on helping cycling do just that.

WADA and the inconsistancies of the various Labs have damaged the Sport of Cycling to where it may have done irreversable damage to the Sport.

I have considerable experience in Random Drug and Alcohol Testing having been responsible on a Corporate Level for the introduction of a US Federally Mandated Program and I can tell you that WADA and its Labs would be chucked out the door given its performance. I will watch the Tour this year as i have done for many many years, ride my road bike almost every day and use my Leica's to photograph local races. The rest is up to the Public and if the Public truly wants a Drug Free Society and Society does not make winning and the $$ that go with it, the only thing that matters.-Dick

Those drugs take their toll..................

I was wondering if David Millar - current rider in the Tour - was any relation to Scotlands Robert Millar who did so well in the 1984. Robert Millar became very reclusive and dropped out of sight at the end of the 90's.

However I managed to find this

Seems he had a sex change 7 years ago, is now called Philippa York and lives down in Dorset!

Maybe he got the performance-enhancing sex hormone mixed up. Supposed to be testosterone, not estrogen! :D

Bad Viagra joke:

Did you hear about the feller Viagra instead of the Vitalis?

Now his hair won't lie down flat!

:(

Boo! Hiss!

Anyway, the Tour kind of collapsed under its own weight this year with all the allegations/withdrawals/accusations. It dropped off my personal radar the day Rasmussen put in a "too-good-to-be-true" ride to the top of the Pyrenees. I thought, surely, after Vino's departure with all the rest, Le Tour was finally settling into something approaching normalcy, and then Rasmussen and the entire team was nowhere to be seen the next morning.

Abysmal. Heartbreaking. Disgusting.

Thanks.

The Drug enhanced performances of Vino and Rasmussen completely interfered with the Tour determining the best overall rider. Is it Contador who was sent to control Rassmussen and gained the time advantage over Liepheimer because if no Rasmussen, then no Contador time advantage and based on the last Mountain and TT stage, Levi wins.

Worst Tour I EVER watched! -Dick

and to make matters worse allegations, at least here in Germany, persist that Contador was involved in the Fuentes affair....

and this 40 years after the death of Tom Simpson, And 9 years after the Festina scandal.

Cycling needs a good kick up the a**

Excuse my cultural pessimism, it is raining over here which might affect my mood.

I read somewhere the records in athletics peaked in the early 70s and declined then, after analysis became better. I have the suspicion a trained human body is able to produce only a certain amount of power, devoid of chemical aid. If one is looking at sports events where skills are more important than body energy conversion, e. g. skiing, the athletes are 1/100 of a second apart meaning the slightest slip will spoil the result.

Sorry, we are just human. We will never catch up with a cheetah or even a bear despite it's overweight issue without the aid of machines. Well, especially in the case of a bear the question is, who would be catching up with whom ;)

This leaves football (and similar sports like handball, basketball...), where drugs probably won't make a difference between hit and miss.
