Redundancy is a good policy when dealing with the kinds of issues that being discussed in this thread.  Planning for contingencies always pays off, but expecting certainty often results in spending lots of time and effort that might otherwise be spent working. I find a mix of "soft" and "hard" (i.e., maintaining physical records, i.e., negatives, raw files, etc.) gives me some space to work in a relatively anxiety-free setting.

It’s astonishing that we managed to move away from having our own wells to centralised water supplies. I suppose y’all held out on that for as long as possible.

Well, our central water supply is publicly-owned, with some degree of accountability and a statutory mandate to provide service. The latter two bits I don't associate with tech companies.
