I think I want to get a 75mm lens... but I definitely can't afford a Leica one right now. I think the CV lenses are what I'll be looking at...

Which CV 75mm would you recommend, and will I need an adaptor?

Does Zeiss make a 75mm?

Thanks!

Amy, the Leica 75 ASPH is a nice lens, it might be worth the wait. All 75's are going to be harder to focus than your current lenses. Maybe not really harder, but more dependent on precision focusing. Perhaps you should work on getting your focusing technique down solid before you make that leap and then go for the Leica.

I've got the magnifier on it's way.

Phillip... do appreciate the input and I'm not sure if you've seen some of my posted photos, but I'm getting pretty comfortable with focusing. Of course, I'm going to keep practicing.

Unfortunately, at around $3K, I don't see the Leica one in my near future...

The C/V 75mm is a remarkably good lens. It is better than all 90mm Elmarit lenses except maybe the current one. It would be a good buy even if it cost fifty percent more. It is perfectly useable wide open, and the speed difference between it and the Summicron is barely more than one half f-stop.

Coding is not an issue. Just slap a 43mm IR cut filter on it and you're off. If you absolutely want it coded – you must be an Exif data fetishist to insist on that – then you must buy a codeable, pre-milled bayonet adapter from John Milich, because the Cosina adapters have a cutout where part of the barcode would be. Apart from that, they work just fine.

Finder magnifier? There's a limit to the doodads I'm going to hang on a M camera. Never needed one of these, in any case.

Amy, I have seen your photos and I did not mean to imply that your focusing "needs improvement;" they look fine! I am glad to hear of your increasing comfort with focusing.

A 75mm lens should give you even more opportunities to practice focusing.

I love Zeiss lenses and the way they draw, and own the 25mm f2.8, 35mm f2 (bought to replace the Leica 35mm f2 cron!), 50mm f2; however, as much as the 85 is tempting, you should consider:

- focus 1m (Leica 75mm f2, focus 0.7m)

- framing: the M8 has 75mm & 90mm frame lines; of course it will be close using either, but not as close as using Leicas;

- price (Leica 75mm f2 asph is cheaper).

I have and love the Leica 90mm f2, which you can find used for less than 1000 euros here; I am waiting on the 75mm f2, and I thought real hard about replacing both with the Zeiss (still am thinking about it actually) 85mm f2 but - pros of having 75 + 90 are too many to just drop them and get the Zeiss I think... still, we are very lucky in having such choices - the CV Heliar looks pretty darn good as well... what to do?

I am afraid I didn't help you much Amy, but the good part is - you are going to be happy with whichever lens you choose!

I don't own the Cosina Voigtlander 75mm lens but I do use and enjoy several other CV lenses (15, 28 and two 50s.) CV offers astonishing value across the board BUT both the Leica 75mm offerings are special and worth the extra expense IMHO. I have owned both and currently prefer the Summicron.

Note that the loupe screws into the normal eyepiece, but if you use a diopter, you will need to unscrew that, screw in the loupe, and then screw the diopter into the loupe. The diopters have no thread to screw the loupe into.

Yes, and that’s really cumbersome. I generally leave the loupe on the camera but have to unscrew using my 24 Elmarit and then screw in the diopter again. Bad construction, it should be possible to screw in the diopter at the camera first and then screw in the loupe. BTW I already lost my first diopter

I talked about this problem to the Leica guy at Fasanenstraße in Berlin who was very kind and helpful but never had heard about this being a problem. He promised to route the idea to his collegues …

There’s always hope for better products

Hi There Amy

Nice to see you posting here as well.

It sounds like you're having fun fun FUN - looks like it too!

I'm sure that you've made a sensible decision with the CV - Sean's review shows how good it is, and it really doesn't need coding.

As for focusing - I don't have any trouble with the 90's or my 75 f2, I'm sure that you'll also find it okay - I was thinking about getting the magnifier - but then you end up taking it off / putting it on etc. etc.

I've spent a lot of money on accessories (hand grips / fancy straps / half cases) etc. etc. Now I've gone back to 'naked camera' - nothing but a lens, and the basic leica strap (which grips on a shoulder well and doesn't scratch the camera.

Enjoy the lens when it comes - I'm sure you will.
