24 Elmar, front ring fell off.

Hi 

 

The front ring on my 24 f/3.8 Elmar-ASPH fell off a few weeks ago and I wonder what you recommend, trying to fix it myself or send it to Wetzlar for repair? It is glued so it looks like a simple operation if I can get the right glue but on the other side it might be safer to let Leica do it.

If it is "only" glued, presumably it is a glue type that enables the ring to be removed if necessary for work on the lens. I would send it in, although from the number i guess it is out of warranty so might be worth getting estimate. May (in fact should) be "No charge".

Try calling to see what glue they use.  It may loosen with heat or some solvent, who knows.  Infinite possibilities.

 

If you guess,  either it can not be removed or will fall off again.

 

Glue should be removed designers options.   It is nothin but trouble, but  bean counters love cheap construction

 

If it were mine,  I would use two or three tiny dabs of silicone caulk from the outside.  Home Depot,  $30 tube, good for 30 years.  Apply so you can cut the caulk with a razor knife from outside.  Intended not to be cosmetically perfect.  But future work can be done .  Good construction people use it all the time. Do not use the $3 stuff.  Apply with a pin or pallet knife.

There is no way to tell the make of the lens cap, on or off the lens.

Does't look like it was very well held on in the first place, I would just stick it back on with some double sided tape, if you use a filter and it does fall off again at least you wont loose it.

For first quote, please, show me Japanese lens with exactly the same focus tab. Not just focus tab, but exactly same one. I'm finding this particular focus tab with cuts on outer sides to be helpful. 

 

For second quote, I'll just post two selfies.

 

 

One is Leica, one with FSU same focal length. It was one FSU person who pointed what here is significant difference in how lenses gives the image. But I wasn't able to see it before by myself.

Kofe, I don't understand what you want to say.

 

1:

Who cares. You can install any tab on any lens.

This is a post about a lens, not about focus tabs.

A tab makes a Lens, not.

 

2:

The whole point is not showing the lenses and let people decide which is which (these tests are usually extremely conclusive as to how a Leica Lens cannot be discovered and is usully a thing of Luck).

 

I actually prefer pic #1. More pleasant rendering. I guess it's a Leica shot, even though it isn't. How could it be anything else??
