dNorm Posted June 23, 2007 Share #1 Â Posted June 23, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) My beloved D2 has just had a heart attack, by all indications the sensor has failed. Surprisingly, my D2 has had very low mileage and has been babied like a newborn. My only question is, will they put the same faulty Sony sensor in after the repair? If that's the case, then I'd expect that the D2 will not survive much longer. If anyone knows is Sony has modified their manufacturing process to correct their faulty sensor, I'd sure like to hear about it. -Norm

squanmis Posted June 25, 2007 Share #4 Â Posted June 25, 2007 Not to be snooty but why would Sony care about the quality of the sensor, since the D2 sensor is producted by Panasonic. My D2's sensor crapped out and I sent it Leica for repair. The problem is I just go a letter stating that the sensor's are on back order and it could take up the 3 months for the repair to be completed. How ever they offered a one time deal to sell me a D3 at a discounted rate of $950 if box intact or $1075 if you just send the camera. Can't do it love my D2 and having a new house built. So I gotta wait. From other threads people who have had them repair say their working great. Get it repair its a great camera. John
dNorm Posted June 25, 2007 Author Share #5  Posted June 25, 2007 ...you are correct that the sensor is made by Matsushita. I already own a Panasonic L1 (Panasonic's version of the D3), so would not see any compelling reason to pay $950 for a D3. Looks like I'll have to wait it out too. -Norm  Not to be snooty but why would Sony care about the quality of the sensor, since the D2 sensor is producted by Panasonic. Riley Posted June 25, 2007 Share #6  Posted June 25, 2007 the sensor is a Sony manufactured sensor it has been a fault with many cameras utilising the 2/3" sensor and has meant recalls industry wide  this is a position I am certain of
dNorm Posted June 25, 2007 Author Share #7  Posted June 25, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) This would suggest a Panasonic sensor: Leica Digilux 2 digital camera specifications: Digital Photography Review  This would suggest a Sony sensor: Widespread CCD problems in consumer imaging products  I'm more inclined to believe that the D2 has a Sony sensor now. -Norm   the sensor is a Sony manufactured sensorit has been a fault with many cameras utilising the 2/3" sensor and has meant recalls industry wide  this is a position I am certain of
dwmackay Posted June 25, 2007 Share #8 Â Posted June 25, 2007 My D2 is in for repair a second time for a failed sensor. The first repair took 3 months and the replacement sensor lasted only 4 months. It is now in the shop for precisley the same reason. Hopefully it will not take 3 months again. At this rate Leica will have my D2 for more time that I will. Â Doug M.
