psquared Posted June 22, 2007 Share #1 Posted June 22, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Well, this is kind of a back-handed compliment. My son graduated ("culminated" is the official word) from elementary school yesterday. I brought my M8 for the short stuff and the R9/DMR for the long stuff. The 180/2.8 APO came in very handy. It was an outdoors ceremony on a sunny southern California day. I took out the DSLR and took a measurement. It said LO at f/2.8!!! (Yes, I took the lens cap off. ) The photocells, which were replaced a year ago, were out again on the R9!! Well, I have no light meter. Thank God for digital and chimping, because I was able to get correct exposures by guessing and chimping. I don't know what I would have done if I just had film. I'm going on a week-long trip tomorrow. I had big plans for the DMR. I'll just have to limp along without photocells. I do have a 5D, which I'll bring along, but I have a feeling I'll still stick with the subpar R9/DMR as the primary system. I do like those images! bobtodrick Posted June 22, 2007 Share #2 Posted June 22, 2007 " I don't know what I would have done if I had just had film?" Ever hear of the sunny F16 rule? Sunny f16 Rule Ya know...before the 50's light meters were not all that common...people still took photos. It's called 'knowing your medium'.
ChadHahn Posted June 23, 2007 Share #3 Posted June 23, 2007 I agree, I read Fred Parkers web-page, Ultimate Exposure Computer, made a cheat sheet to put in my wallet and preceded to shoot my iif with out a meter. If you only use one speed of film you start to be able to figure out exposures pretty quickly. I was able to take lots of pictures and they all turned out. psquared Posted June 23, 2007 Author Share #4 Posted June 23, 2007 " I don't know what I would have done if I had just had film?" Ever hear of the sunny F16 rule? Yes, that was my starting point, and the pictures were 2 stops over-exposed. That's why I think the instant feedback with histograms is invaluable. But the issue I was really getting at was that this is the second time in 18 months that I will have to replace the photocells on this R9. As much as I love the image quality, this Leica road certainly hasn't been free of bumps.

It sounds as though you ought to invoke a ¨Lemon Law¨ kind of argument; this just should not happen! But you are right, the R9 is a great tool!
