Hi,

I just took the plunge to purchase both 24-90mm and 90-280mm. I received both of them 2 days ago. The 90-280mm works very well however the 24-90mm lens seems to have some problems. The OIS seems to be keep activating and causing the image to jerk although I didn't do anything to the camera. When I switch off the OIS, everything went back to normal. I took a video of the jerking and the noise (physical sound) that the lens make. My SL is mounted onto a Tripod and 24-90mm lens is at 90mm focusing on the ironman, the video is in this link...

Hope someone can share with me if there is any setting that I have set wrongly or this is just a bad copy. Thank you very much!

regards

Wang

IS doesn't work well on a tripod - it's not intended for that purpose, and can cause problems. Switching off OIS is the right thing to do here. Do you have the same problem handheld?

If I sound authoritative, it is because I had exactly the same problem with the same system when I got it, and discovered my mistake by online research afterwards.

The behaviour could be explained as Paul says ...... but the sound is odd ..... both AF and OIS on the 24-90 is inaudible unless you put your ear close to the lens.

OIS on when using tripod/static camera tends to result in the image drifting a bit ..... but it tends to be slow and not a sudden jerk.

I have OIS on all the time .... even with tripod use and have never seen anything like this ..... I would be inclined to suspect a lens fault or something wrong with the lens firmware.

Hi Paul, the same happened when handheld.

Thank you, I probably arrange for it to be send back for repair.

You can hear a faint "hiss" from what I believe are the OIS motors and you might hear a slight noise when powering the camera on, but I've never seen any kind of jerking movement in the image.  I've used a few different 24-90s so I'm pretty confident what you're experiencing isn't normal.

Hi Wang,

Can I check if the jerking is an issue? Didn’t hear a follow up. I saw your video and noticed a 24-90 used i tested yesterday had the same jerking. I did not pan. It just jerked exactly like your video showed. I was going to buy used from the guy who was selling when i was prompted to double check first.
