robert_parker Posted June 29, 2007 Share #41  Posted June 29, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I had an informal conversation with Leica today and got the feeling that most of the UK ones were going to be recycled as 'loan' cameras and not scrapped, which is great relief.  Interestingly I sensed some concern that if the cameras were sold agin in the aftermarket, it might generated bad publicity (by virtue of Leica making a profit on the resale)  Personally, I'd be more than happy if my refurbished D2 was sold again to another grateful amateur and would be overjoyed if Leica did make a profit on the deal  - alternatively I'd also be happy if the cameras made their way to art colleges or were given or loaned to students or young photographers starting out who could not affird the latest kit Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Today I got a post card in the mail, "We Love Loyal Leica Customers!". Basically offering the Digilux 3 for $1800 for any registered Leica product owners. The $980 upgrade deal now does not look all that attractive now. Â I hope they are not dumping the Digilux 3, seems to be too many offers to unload the camera. I would like the lens on a different body. Â Oh what to do. Â The repair estimate says priority 4-5 weeks but from reading this thread this can't be true. They are waiting for the shipment of sensors which they are scheduled to arrive next week. The sensor repair happens in NJ and they will clear out all of the D2's that have been waiting on sensors. Today I got through to their service department and was told that it would be at least until mid to late August before the sensors arrive. No word of an upgrade. I have a Panasonic so I don't need the Digilux 3 upgrade unless they're going to put a different lens on it (like the new 25mm 1.4). Mine failed and the south coast of England is anything but tropical I can assure you. I jumped at the chance of upgrading to a D3. Once bitten, twice shy and all that.... It's a better camera anyway. Rain has so far precluded doing serious photography, but camera seems to handle nicely. Ive always been an Oly user, when ever I've changed its been disaster,so I've gone back into the Oly fold. Excellent and courteous sevice.  It was sent to them on 31st May so turnaround under two months.  Now I have the camera back I'm pleased I didn't go for the upgrade offer.  My wife is a professional artist and sells art and canvas prints of her oils and watercolours online. I use the D2 to photograph her work and the files that it produces shooting under controlled conditions are so accurate for colour and definition. Its also useful having the live view.  I expect to be told the Digilux 3 is better but I would have lost the D2 and paid out almost £900 for the exchange.  NR Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

My D2 has been to MK and the chip is faulty. However it is to be sent to the factory in Japan, NOT Solms. If I were to buy a L1 and get my D2 back, eventually, this would be the best value deal. However Leica would have lost an ardent fan and loyal customer. Indeed all future Leica cameras will be, of necessity, a hotch-potch of different manufacturers components. ajthornbury Posted July 27, 2007 Share #56 Â Posted July 27, 2007 Well Launence I think you are right, this is my first experience with Leica, in my estimation the red dot is tarnished, I think I'll stick with Olympus, as I said earlier. Put this episode down as a bad life experience. Whilst Leica are at least offering to repair them, the return date for my camera seems to be disappearing in to the distant future. At least with my new E410 I can at least start taking photographs again with a quality lens as good as Leica. My previous OLY cameras CL1400, E10 and E20 have all served me well in the past.
