satijntje Posted March 18, 2017 Share #41 Â Posted March 18, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) So, it cannot be excluded that those British companies that are offering cameras and lenses about 20% below the normal selling value are not paying VAT. It seems that this is a huge fraud case that might goes into the millions! Typical case for the antifraud units of OLAF, DG TAXUD or DG COMP of the EU Commission! Apart of the fraud, it is an unfair competition against those companies that are declaring and charging taxes following the rules! J

thighslapper Posted March 18, 2017 Share #43  Posted March 18, 2017 Trade has never been fair ..... it has been rigged by governments to suit their own ends since the beginning of time ....... and a few minutes after it started people were working out ways to get round the rules.  The EU is one of the most controlled and regulated trading blocs in the world and makes life very difficult for anyone outside it.  I recall visiting a remote village on Poland/Belarus border a few years after Poland joined the EU and was surprised to see enormous new 4x4's, Mercs and high end BMW's parked outside all the ramshackle wooden houses on a rutted dirt road. No guesses how they made their money.  Things that are actually cheaper in the UK than other european countries at the moment are invariably due to competition, low margins and the parlous state of the £, rather than import fraud, which I suspect is no higher than in other EU countries.
jrp Posted March 18, 2017 Share #44  Posted March 18, 2017 Yes, EU rules are designed for our convenience and protection rather than the Chinese or Americans. No, I don't want to eat chlorinated chicken.  Yes, Richard Lionheart taxed French wine imports to fund the Crusades, because the barons wouldn't fork out, and so we got excise duties, a system perfected on the Rhine.  Yes, some public officials are corrupt anywhere you go. In some cases they are just incompetent, underresourced, or have bigger fish to fry. Here we are talking about evasion by companies exporting into the EU.  The weak £ makes imports more expensive, not cheaper.
