petebown Posted June 18, 2007 Share #1 Posted June 18, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I currently own an R7 with a couple of 3 cam lenses, but am considering adding an R8 to my collection. Can non ROM lenses be used on the R8 and R9? If so, which modes/functions are lost?

Yes!.. ...I use only 3cam lenses because of my Leicaflex SL2.. about the modes/functions I have no idea.... regards, Jan
k_g_wolf ✝ Posted June 18, 2007 Share #3 Posted June 18, 2007 They will work alright in all exposuremodes, the only drawback would be in case you use a flash. But here it´s only the >>dialog<< between flash and camera which is disturbed. I.e the automatic reflector- zoom won´t function. Best Best
Guest maddin Posted June 19, 2007 Share #4 Posted June 19, 2007 You could refer to this thread giving you serval aspects on the subject: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/customer-forum/15854-modifying-3-cam-rom.html cheers
ruiespanhol Posted June 19, 2007 Share #5 Posted June 19, 2007 Like K.G Wolf sayed it was only the flash functions like control zoom is afected. The others modes of the camera working well whit no problems. However when I stayed in Leica plant here in Portugal I see how they adjust the camera and in the factory they use ROM lenses because that lenses send information from body like real focal distance, aperture, distortion, etc for better exposure control. But You can use that lenses whitout ROM whit no problems. I use one 50mm/f2 whitout Rom only whit the R cam and no problems. Best, Rui
telyt Posted June 21, 2007 Share #6 Posted June 21, 2007 None of my lenses have the ROM contacts, all work fine on my R8 with or without DMR. The information the ROM contacts pass to the camera can help correct uneven exposure when used with the DMR i.e., light fall-off with wide-angle lenses. k_g_wolf ✝ Posted June 21, 2007 Share #7 Posted June 21, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I took the chance to ask a LEICA service- technician recently about the use of non-rommed lenses on the R8/ R9 + DMR. He strongly advised only to use rommed lenses together with the DMR. Otherwise the full potential of the lenses and the DMR could not be met ... Whatever this means. He didn´t leave the impression he wanted to upgrade older lenses by all means. His opinion seemed to have been purely technical. Best
andybarton Posted June 21, 2007 Share #8 Posted June 21, 2007 I have an older, big-fella 19, which is not ROM'd. There is no significant light fall off noticeable when it is used with my DMR. I swapped (traded) an older non-ROM 28, for a newer, ROM'd one, and can't say that the extra £600 it cost me was worth it. If you have a stable of non-ROM'd 3-cam lenses and a DMR, don't worry about it.
med45icus Posted June 21, 2007 Share #9 Posted June 21, 2007 I use without problems 2,8 19, 2,8 28, 2,8 35, 2,8 135 and 2,8 180mm on my R9. All lenses without ROM. Best KDB
