Otus on SL

I've read abbots these lenses for a while now and I'm considering adding an 85mm to my SL kit.

 

Has anyone here been using an otus on an SL for any length of time? I'm interested to hear from those who've used this combo extensively.

Otus 55. I prefer the 24-90 in standard situations, when I don`t need the 1.4. The image quality is both the same in my kind of photography.

I use the Otus 55mm with EOS/SL adapter. It works quite well. The diaphragm opens and closes once when the lens is attached, and there is possibly a little delay before the diaphragm opens again after an exposure, compared to a native lens. If this is any different with the Nikon adapter, I don`t know. Optically, the Otus is an extraordinary lens. How it compares to the Summilux SL I don`t know and I have not read any comparisons.

The Novoflex Nikon adapter is a manual adapter only. No automatic performance anyway. The Otus is not supported by the other Novoflex, SL/ NIK, adaptor.

I did not know that it is not supported the same way with the Nikon adapter as with the Canon adapter. Strange. Perhaps a future firmware upgrade will sort this out.

It's not supported by the Nikon adapter in the same way as the Canon because the Nikon version of the lens has manual aperture control. It's probably better this way as it can be adapted to any number of cameras without any electronic interface required.

This is because only the new Nikkor E-Series works similar as the Canon Series do since the beginning of EF. Nikkor G series and before have mechanical aperture only, as LD_50 told us yet. Otus series for Nikon is G compatible, not E compatible.

Canon, definitely. EOS lenses behave more like L-mount lenses, they focus the same way as L-mount and M-mount, and Sigma's adapter is the best. It's solidly built, widely available, and more compatible because it's made by an L-mount partner.

The only sour note is if you have an SL (not an SL2 or SL3), because Sigma's adapter isn't compatible with that model. You would need to find a discontinued Novoflex EOS adapter that only works with the SL and not with later models. In that case you might want an F-mount version so you can use the same third-party adapter on your SL and on later models.

Canon version of Otus 55 works like a charm on SL cameras. Sharpest corner to corner FF f/1.4 wide open lens ever. It draws differently than the 50 Summilux-SL. Otus will show a sharp object at the point of focus against an equally blurred background no matter the distance of the objects in the background to the point of focus (Zeiss 3D-Pop). Summilux-SL will show depth wide open as if one can reach in and grab the object (Leica 3D rendering). Another difference is that the Otus has smooth bokeh in front of the focus point, too, whereas Summilux-SL has creamy bokeh only behind the focus point and more nervous bokeh in front of it. Summilux-SL is state of the art weather sealed, Otus has no weather sealing.

For better SL lens mount weather sealing one can use a thick elastic hair tie, BTW. Any color will do. 😂

A question: how does the aperture setting work on the Canon version? Is it electronic? Unlike the Nikon, which is manual, right?

Yes, it's electronic, like native SL lenses.

EOS lenses work the same way as SL lenses, with the right EOS-to-L mount adapter (Novoflex for SL, Sigma for SL2, SL2-s, and SL3). In manual and aperture-priority the rear thumb dial controls the f-stop. In shutter priority and program the f-stop is controlled by the camera's exposure meter.
