Well, not celebrating but feeling more purist. ..... I thought some M240 users may want to voice that they like M240 video feature. I do. Even if I have shot only around 30 videos in the span of 2.5 years, they have been essential to me. Many videos are taken in back country hikes where I didn't have iPhone with me to take video. Most of the times the video is disabled in my profile along with LV and it doesn't bother me. When I need video then I switch to a profile that enables it. It works for me. Just now I also made a discovery for M240. While the video is recording, I can press the shutter and take a picture. After the picture is taken, the video recording continues. In video replay, you will see video pauses at the time of still picture, shows still picture for an instant then resumes remaining video. Cool. Isn't it. I liked that implementation. If there is a photo opportunity arises while shooting video, I won't miss it. This is very different than my Sony Nex-6 where video recording disables regular shutter. Come one, you don't have to be ashamed of using M240 video. Speak up.

Kwesi Posted February 11, 2017 Share #2 Posted February 11, 2017 I think having video is wonderful and was one of the reasons i upgraded from the M9. Photography is evolving and more and more i see in contemporary museums a video framed like a photo on a wall that looks exactly like a still image except that a small portion of it is moving - perhaps a leaf falling from a tree in the background. I have been calling these images "time based photography" and would love to try this some day with the M240

I have been calling these images "time based photography" and would love to try this some day with the M240 I think Apple calls it live image or something which is nothing but a very short video of couple of seconds. I am not sure I want it since display medium is not matured yet. It is also so much non-traditional that I am sure Leica will be the last to have it. None other dedicated cameras have that. Of course you can make your own live image using video feature but it is extra work.
Kwesi Posted February 11, 2017 Share #4 Posted February 11, 2017 I was thinking more along the lines of lets say a traditional framed portrait hanging in a gallery, the sitter is looking of in the distance, after about 10 seconds he very slowly turns only his head to make eye contact with you for a few seconds then video loops back to beginning
Kwesi Posted February 11, 2017 Share #5 Posted February 11, 2017 About a year after making this image in Mexico, i remembered that i also made a video of the Mariachi band serenading her. The sounds brought the memories back into sharp focus. Another reason to love video on the M240

Daniel Beacock Posted February 13, 2017 Share #7 Posted February 13, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) The rolling shutter is bad, the lack of stabilisation is a major problem, but I agree, I'd miss it as it's the only video recording option, outside of my phone, that I currently have. I don't use it extensively, but it is useful and, if you are aware of it's limitations and can work within them, it is usable. I had no clue that I could snap a still while taking a video. Wow. Makes me like the camera more. How do I separate the still from the video in photoshop? I too have only taken a few videos, but I like that it is there. And now I will try the still shot. Please let me know if you have separated the still out from the video. Never mind. I just took a video and snapped a still. It automatically separates it from the video. Love it. Thanks, Dan Edited February 14, 2017 by drdannn
epand56 Posted February 26, 2017 Share #10 Posted February 26, 2017 I do not understand purists at all. I do not even understand what being a purist means, in particular when using a digital camera. This said, I do not mind at all that my M240 can record videos. I never did it so far, but maybe one day I will need to record a video and I know I can do that. If one wants to be a "purist" should take an original M, without batteries, and shoot film. And then, if he's a purist, no scanner, dark room only. And if this is not enough, he can find a tripod camera like the one Nadar was using for his daguerreotypes. To me a purist is anyone taking pictures because he likes it, no matter what camera has and what the camera can do. You always have to use your eye and push a button.
