Help with ABLON date.

Hi all,

After using my 3D printed ABLON style trimming guide for a while (the one that Mike posted about here) I've now been and bought a proper one from the usual auction site. It's the square bottom type with the hole and slot at the pointed end.

However, I've noticed that the embossed Leitz logo isn't the usual E.Leitz prism shape (as you'll see from the pics attached) and I've not seen one of these with this kind of logo on it.

So, to all you knowledgeable collectors and aficionados out there...

As far as dating it goes, would this be pre or post war? My 1935 Leica Manual book shows the black, curved end trimming guides with E. Leitz Wetzlar printed along the hinge edge so I presume the one I have bought is much later, but how much later?

Or is it perhaps a fake one? It'd be no hardship if it was as I didn't pay a massive amount for it. The seller hadn't listed it as an ABLON and didn't really know what it was.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Simon.

I think it is a later rather than an earlier version.  See the Laney book, second edition page 40, for some background on scripts and logos. The big transition was after the war, 1952, to a perceived more "modern" look.  Other products such as the Imarect and ELDIA moved to the leitz script rather than the condenser logo in later production.  The ABLON was available until about 1965, although I expect not too many were sold then because most films came pre-cut or other templates were available. The ABLON with condenser logo is much more common, and what you have is somewhat unique.

Thanks for such an in depth reply Alan, much appreciated. I'm even more happy with my purchase now.

Being new to the world of Leica I have much to learn and info like this makes me eager to do so.
