D-lux 3 or GX 100

Murray,

I recently purchased the D-Lux 3 and am very happy with it. I did as much research as I could. Let's face it. No one wants to spend $600 on a "P&S" and not be satisfied! The picture quality is on par with my D3. Surprisingly, shutter lag is minimal for jpegs and pretty good for RAW files (I prefer RAW no matter which camera I use). Things I like about this camera:

1. 10mp

2. RAW

3. Manual controls

4. 16:9, 4:3, 3;2

5. 4X zoom (5 or 6 would be better, but...)

6. Pop-up flash

7. Physical design

8. Picture quality - color and overal rendition (not so "plastic-looking")

I'm sure there are other cheaper digicams with similar qualities or even better qualities (my 3yr old Olympus C7000 is great!), but if you have your heart set on a Leica and don't mind the $$, you won't be disappointed. Your best bet is to try one out before you buy. It's smaller in person that the online pictures lead you to believe. I didn't have the opportunity to demo one before I bought, so I took a BIG leap of faith. Glad I did.

From another D-Lux 3 owner..........yeah it's a great camera luvit, don't for a minute regret buying it......but it would be nice to hear something from a GX 100 owner. Anyone out there?

At least it has one thing over the D-Lux - a viewfinder - and if for that reason alone, I'd think that if you have the time, it'd be worth at least doing a touchy feelie with both cameras.

I doubt that the GX 100 hits all the buttons the D-Lux does, but if it did, then that viewfinder might just tip the scales.

Just my 2d worth.

I have a GX100 and think it's a great little camera. The DNGs develop well with PS raw developer, but not with C1 Pro. They do appear to be truly raw and unprocessed. The lens has pretty good bokeh, in fact it's outstanding for a zoom, and dynamic range and color doesn't suck like just about every other P&S I've held. I use it with optical viewfinders in the hot shoe, the zoom has a 'step' setting that makes it move in a progression of 24-28-35-50-72. It also displays the 35mm-equivalent focal length on the screen, making it easy to pick a VF or use one that's adjustable. It works with the same Transcend 150X 4GB SD cards (non-SDHC) as I use in the M8, as long as they're formatted in-camera. I find the EVF useless personally, my eyes can focus close enough and the diopter adjustment on it isn't sufficient. Never touched a D-Lux 3.

There was some brief discussion about it over on Fred Miranda's site:
