Did the camera not come with an instruction book? Here is a link to the download, it has a search option...

http://en.leica-camera.com/Photography/Leica-SL/Downloadsunfortunatly not. Thanks for the link but unfortunately it doesn't answer my question as Leica don't know what all there customers assign the FN butler to :) :)

If he's a butler, I would think you can assign him to pretty much anything that does not transgress human rights or labour laws. I guess that it's not so easy though, Neil, if, as you report, he is difficult to find.

The short press functions of the FN button are the simulation modes: normal, aperture (for use with dedicated lenses), and exposure (simulation of both exposure and closed down aperture).

The default long press function is set to white balance. This is not useful to me, I only rarely change from auto white balance since most of my work is raw capture. My normal long press function assignment is Lens Profiles for use with adapted R and M lenses. I can't recall off hand and don't have the SL24-90 with me to check, but I believe I have it set to OIS off/on when using my configs for dedicated lenses. (It's either that or AF mode.)

?? I wonder if you're serious with some of the questions you ask. You asked in another thread the aspect ratio of the SL files. This is obvious with the dimensions of the resulting files, is also in the instruction manual delivered with the SL, and is configurable in the menu on the camera under obviously enough "Photo Aspect Ratio."

The question you're asking about the Fn button was answered very clearly by ramarren. It's also explained in the instruction manual delivered with the SL.

Manual:

n.

1. A small reference book, especially one giving instructions.

normal :: no annotation

aperture simulation :: annotation of the aperture in the viewfinder display

exposure simulation :: annotation of both the aperture and the shutter time in the viewfinder display

See page 219 in the Leica SL Instruction Manual, topic "Exposure Simulation/Depth of Field Control."

Capisco?

I don't get/understand the "aperture simulation :: annotation of the aperture in the viewfinder display" and I guess Capisco is a typo ????

The EVF adjusts its brightness to a standard setting, regardless of what you have set the exposure at. So, as you change the exposure, the EVF remains the same.

If you press the fn button, the EVF shows first the depth of field at the chosen aperture and on the second press the actual exposure. This is very useful if you don't particularly like or trust the meter - you can adjust the exposure to what you want based on how the image appears in the EVF.

It's very useful. To experiment, put the camera in M mode and select an ISO setting (not Auto), press the fn button twice and adjust the shutter and aperture - you will see the image in the EVF lighten and darken - this is the image you will get on the sensor.

Capisco -understand? In Italian.

Fantastic mate.....for the love of me I just couldn't get my head wrapped around that. I guess in aperture priority mode you will get the same effect while dealing in or out EV compensation ??
