SL on Safari

try posting pictures shot with a Nikon on the Leica forum and see how far you get......... the mods would have a field day deleting them :)

That is in line with what I'm saying. I don't see the point in attempting to shoot an SL with a Nikon super-telephoto when you've available what is probably Nikon's best camera for the application, the D5.

If the purpose is to get an idea of whether the SL with adapted lenses can hang with a D5 with native ones in a birding or safari application, the answer is already known. It cannot.

The SL with 90-280 might be an interesting comparison to D5 with 70-200 and 1.4 TC with relatively static subjects.

Ii do t think so mate. 280 verses 250 is only 30mm.

Maybe there's something in the S crop factor I'm missing. Either way 280 ain't long enough

250 on the S sensor is equivalent to 200 on the SL so you're losing 80mm in SL terms, which needs a crop to 70% to retrieve.  70% of 37mp= 26mp, so there's nothing in it really.

Has anyone here who has the 90/280mm got any wildlife pictures.......... the proof is in the pudding

Try this:  http://www.madeinwetzlar.com/wildlife-photography-with-the-leica-sl

There is also a video made with the SL (about the SL) of polar bears made by Norbert Rosing - maybe I find the link again. But he is using the R modular system. Probably too commercial for many:

I do not know why this error message is shown. Simply click the link and you can watch it.

I think jaapv could simply add a link to his images. They are somewhere on the forum.  E.g. his horny lady: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/237101-horny-lady/

I had Canon gear once upon a time with the 300mm f/4 L IS and their crop sensor body, netting an effective 480mm lens. The IS was definitely helpful, but the autofocusing never netted me much more than I got as keepers with my Nikons and manual focus 500mm lens. I'd bring my Telyt 250 and 2x doubler for the same thing with the SL.

280 is the same everywhere. :)

And jaapv was on safari - with a M240, but his 105-280 is similar to the 90-280.

(See my corrected/added note.)  So he had no OIS.

But I would like to see the Nikon 4/600 E tested with the AF adapter. There are other lenses in the Nikon gear (especially the tiny 4/300 PF) I really would like to buy - if the Novoflex adapter offers decent AF speed. (A BIG question mark)

(I could only offer photos with a Canon 100-400, but not good enough for this forum.   ;) )

If buying into super telephotos you're better off buying a native camera as an accessory to the lens instead of buying an accessory adapter for a sub par experience with the SL.

I already have Nikon's finest. This thread is about experimenting and trying new sh!t out[emoji3]

What is the game on your safari ?   Running gnus ? Or hunting cheetahs ? Flying birds ? That's tough.

Or rather elephants, giraffes and rhinos, standing there and suspiciously eyeing you ? This can probably be handled with an adapted lens.

Try the 4/600 lens and if you succeed in taking a photo of a bird or monkey in Malaysia, then it is fast enough for the giraffes in africa.

Great photos Neil. I've enjoyed them before but it's nice to see them again.

Which raise the question in my mind: what's wrong with the gear you used in January since it all seems to have done you proud?

because I like pushing the leica to ne limits. Remember shooting waterfalls in Kashmir with the Noctilux and getting light leaks due to weight of the lens on the m. I ended up using my old lady's crunches to keep the light out

Great photos, stick with the D5. :)

Or use the 5Ds plus 100-400 if you want more resolution. (50MP). But the photos are so good, changing the gear is only a waste of money.

It might be a waste of time and money photographically, but it's not a waste if it gives him pleasure I suppose.

I hadn't realized the point was to experiment even though it's known the gear you're asking about is inferior for the application when compared to your Nikon gear.

With that I've nothing to offer to the conversation. Take care.

I did a safari with the 24-90 and 90-280, it was perfect combo most of the time.  But we were also able to get very close to the animals as it was a private reserve.  The pics were great and was able to get pretty close.  I was happy with the results of the 90-280 on the SL.
