sixteen pads Posted November 14, 2016 Share #1  Posted November 14, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello Gentleman,  Quick question. Would anyone know where this leak would be coming from ? Is it seals giving up in one spot or something else ? I am no expert on leaks. Any ideas / help would be appreciated. Thank you !

jofe Posted November 15, 2016 Share #3 Â Posted November 15, 2016 In the case of my R5 this was the result of a leak at film window. You should control the material . . .
masjah Posted November 15, 2016 Share #4 Â Posted November 15, 2016 In the case of my R5 this was the result of a leak at film window. You should control the material . . . That possibility is very easily decided with a bit of insulating tape over the window. (My old R8 has such a leak and I've simply left the tape in place.) jip Posted November 15, 2016 Share #5 Â Posted November 15, 2016 The streak is orange meaning the light comes from behind not from the front (then it would be white). Â It is most probably the film viewing window, my R8 had this problem. I emailed Leica and they send me the replacement rubber/foam for free.
sixteen pads Posted November 15, 2016 Author Share #6  Posted November 15, 2016 Thank you all for such detailed feedback. I will try the film window tape trick first and go from there.  The leak happens on frames when I am visibly exposing the camera body to more light by standing in the sun etc. It is not really present indoors at all.  Good day to all.

adan Posted November 16, 2016 Share #8 Â Posted November 16, 2016 What actually leaks is the rectangular-doughnut of black rubber sponge surrounding the film ID window in the inside. Those decay with age and either deform or start to come apart - not unexpected with 30-year-old synthetic rubber sponge. Â User-replaceable - you need to totally remove the original sponge rubber and glue, and then you can get a replacement piece from Leica Parts and Service (likely Leica USA in NJ for Canada), peel off release paper that protects the contact glue on the new part, and just carefully stick it into place around the window on the inside of the back. StephenT Posted November 25, 2016 Share #9 Â Posted November 25, 2016 What I do with my R bodies is to simply remove the deteriorated foam from around the window and replace it with a solid piece of the appropriate size dense foam available from any of the hobby stores in 8x10 sheets. Â I glue it with Pliobond. Â Since I roll my own film from bulk, I have no need to see anything in the view window, and by completely covering it, I feel more comfortable shooting near infrared film when desired.
