How are you using th user profiles are you using?

Hi,

Sorry about the header - I seemed to hit submit.

 

I have not found much info about what SL users are putting in their profiles. On the M9 I have a default profile, one for indoor, etc. What have people found useful on the SL?

I have :

 

AUTO         (all my usual basic autofocus settings etc)

TIMER        (as there is no direct way of accessing this) 

HDR           (3 shot with fixed WB, iso, timed release etc)

MAN(UAL)  (set for manual focus lenses)

 

To be honest I have used these much less than on the M as re-assigning the buttons has given me easy access to changing most things I usually need.

 

Using AUTO to restore any changes to my default is probably the most useful of these.

HDR is handy as there are a lot of things you need to avoid problems with HDR. 

 

If I used mostly manual M lenses I suspect my setup would be similar to the M (and yours) ....... this choice is based on 24-90 and 99-280 AF use.

I have a Default profile, which is all my normal settings, available for resetting after a firmware update. Intended for taking a photo asap after switching on, it sets Auto ISO, Auto WB, A mode exposure etc.

I have recently made a Flash profile, which sets Manual exposure, ISO 100, switches off Exposure Preview (on the half press) and sets WB to Flash.

That's all.

 

I use the SL lenses on the SL 99% of the time.

I have four different profiles, which cover my needs:

 

1) AFS (for portrait)

2) AFC

3) AFC with face recognition

4) Video

 

I set the front button to the profile selection, so I can switch easily between those four settings. Of course I configutred the menue specifcly to each profile

All my user configs provide a baseline for using the camera with particular imaging notions in mind. The first two default to my most-used lens profiles for those configs. 

 

1) R Lens ... setup for using R lenses (Summilux-R 50mm, FF, color)

2) SWC ... setup for ultra-wide square shooting with R or M lenses (Super-Elmar-R 15mm, 1:1 framing, BW)

3) SL MF ... setup for using the SL24-90 in manual focus mode

4) SL AF ... setup for using the SL24-90 in auto focus mode

Yes, user profiles can include customizations to the Favorites menu section. 

I use different functions with the SL24-90 lens than I use with the R lenses... all the focus options, etc... so when I'm in the SL lens user configurations, the Favorites menus include those things and drop a couple of the less-used items I need when I'm working with manual focus lenses. 

 

If you want details, I'll have to take out the camera and create listings ... It's been a long time since I changed any of my configurations and I don't recall all the specifics anymore.

I'm taking you up on your offer to Per.  Yes, please do take out your SL and do create that listing.  I just got my SL and, like you, will be using it with R and M lenses, since I don't have any SL lenses, ...yet.  I have a full range of these lenses, from the 12mm SuperWide Heliar-M to the 500mm M-Telyt R and, as long as my eyesight holds, I want to keep using them all!

The differences in my Favorites menu setup for R and M vs SL lenses is smaller than I thought ...

 

R and M: 

1. Interval
2. White Balance
3. JPEG settings
4. AutoISO settings
5. WLAN

 

SL lenses: 

1. Focus Mode

2. Interval

3. White Balance
4. JPEG settings
5. AutoISO settings
6. Optical Image Stabilization 
7. WLAN

 

The button assignments are the same also, except for the FN button.

 

• UL: Drive Mode
• BL: Metering Pattern
• UR: Exposure Compensation
• BR: ISO
• Still/Video mode: Exposure bracketing
• Video release: Load Profile
• FN: Lens Profile

 

For the SL lens, the FN button is assigned to be yet another way to access the optical image stabilization menu.

Thank you all, especially to ramarren - although I hope it was not too much hardship to pick up the camera 

 

For now I have defined 4 user profiles: Standard (possible because all my lenses are auto-detected), Hi ISO (+2/3 exp. comp., higher max ISO), B&W (DNG + b&w small jpg), Tripod (fixed ISO, IS off, spirit level on, bracketing).

 

For the moment I have identical favourites and buttons across all of these.

Never a problem at all. If I'm anywhere near my office, it's sitting right behind me. It's with me about half the time when I'm out these days, because I'm also doing a lot of my shooting with the M-D.

Since we last discussed this I have dropped the High ISO preset and instead created one for using the SL 90-280mm zoom. It includes image stabilizer, slowest shutter speed of 1/250 and spot metering - and can of course also be used with the 24-90 zoom when required. I love that the presets are named, contrary to what I was used to with my old SLRs.
