dimon Posted June 14, 2007 Share #1  Posted June 14, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) hi peers:  I ran into quandary big time - and need help.  here it goes:  I recently purchased 1-st generation 180mm f2.8 Elmarit-R 3-CAM with 72mm mount and built-in retractable lens shade. Old lens, good quality optics, and reasonably priced - I needed it for one special assignment, and am planning to keep it afterwards.  I have 72mm B+W UV filter which I can't mount on, because of that retaining ring on the shade. It prevents the filter to go into the threaded mount of the lens. I reckon there is a special drop-in ofilter from Leica. Just wondering if that retaining ring on the shade can be taken off (I was told by repair man it can not). Anyway, it is frustrating, since i'd like to use polirizer as well - UV is for mechanical protestion only. And I can't even mount any filter on the lens.  Please chime in if you have experience with your own identical lens - your help would be greatly appreciated.  thanks  D

Angora Posted June 14, 2007 Share #2 Â Posted June 14, 2007 If it's the very first generation, don't you have to use Series xxx filters ?
dimon Posted June 14, 2007 Author Share #3  Posted June 14, 2007 I figured so it's just I already had B+W, that was very tempting to use on the lens - same size would you have specifics on the filter - I guess I should buy one now  thnx
doubice Posted June 14, 2007 Share #4 Â Posted June 14, 2007 Dmitri, Â The first generation 2.8/180mm Elmarit-R uses Series VIII filters. The retaining ring that is attached to your lens can definitely be removed, as it will hold the drop-in filter in place. Â These rings are sometimes dificult to remove. The trick is to remove it while applying even pressure around the whole circumference of the ring - try placing the palm of your hand on the ring and applying pressure towrds the lens while unscrewing. If you grab the ring with two fingers only, the pressure applied will twist the threads, making it difficult to remove the filter. Bill Morgenstern Posted June 14, 2007 Share #5 Â Posted June 14, 2007 Half the challenge of using Leica equipment is figuring out what fits what. Your lens has a two piece filter retaining ring (#14165) for Series filters. Simply replace the thin top ring with a (non-Leica) 69 to 72mm adapter ring. Then you can use any 72mm filter on that lens and on the first 250 F/4, which has the same mount. Without that 14165 ring, any filter would sit too deep to be accessible. Good Luck. Bill Morgenstern Posted June 15, 2007 Share #8 Â Posted June 15, 2007 Sorry, but while the 69 to 72mm adapter will let you use your 72mm filters, it will not let you extend the lens shade.
