Yes, I remember that, it was being sold on the strength of a sealed box and an x-ray showing what was supposedly in it. Schrödinger's cat meets Leica camera, I wonder whether it is still in the box? Actually the MP Classic is a batteryless MP and yet, it is clearly a MP and not a M-A. I went to a Leica shop with my fresh CLA´d M4 and put it side to side to an M-A. Honestly, I would NEVER take the money and spend it for a M-A. Even the viewfinder is so close in brightness and contrast, that I would always choose an original handcrafted M and bring it back to a A++ condition for THAT money (and spend the rest for a new summicron), than to an expensive MP without a lightmeter... The M-A is an irrational option when there are plenty of functionally equivalent used cameras available for 25% of the new price but it is often nice to buy something brand new and if there weren't irrational or impatient people like me around, Leica would no longer be in a position to make a film camera. Of the two, I found myself using the M7 most of the time, as I like aperture-priority metering, I am quite accustomed to pointing and holding exposure on whatever suits the situation and then recomposing. So if you want to justify a second body either because you need two kinds of film, or are shooting fast enough that you need a body for each of two focal lengths, not only would I recommend a second M7, I would argue that two bodies used exactly the same way makes for a better solution where speed of use is a factor. However, irrationality has crept into the discussion. Most of us are not in situations where very fast responses to the potential photograph that suddenly presents itself to us is a real concern. Lust for equipment is a bigger factor, and there is nothing wrong with that. If you use Leicas for pleasure it is completely rational to do whatever increases that pleasure. If you want an MP and can afford one, I say you should go for it. They are very easy to sell for very little loss (I speak as someone who as bought and sold three of the little buggers over the years. Did I mention irrationality?) C.
