carl170 Posted October 24, 2016 Share #1  Posted October 24, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi all!  I have been offered a Leica M4-P for what I think is a good price. However, I have been sent a picture and the serial number of the camera is 1532XXX.  The databases I have checked show it should be a M4-2, yet it is quite clearly an M4-P!  Can anyone shed any light on this?  Thanks in advance!  Regards  Carl

carl170 Posted October 24, 2016 Author Share #2 Â Posted October 24, 2016 Sorry, I have screwed up the title. I can't seem to change it either! Â Cheers! Â Carl
michaelwj Posted October 24, 2016 Share #3 Â Posted October 24, 2016 The wiki lists one M4-2, s/n 1532885 as an M4-P, so there was likely a batch of -Ps around that time. It was during the changeover from the -2 to the -P and serial numbers are pre-assigned and not necessarily sequential. I'd say it's an early M4-P. Â Why would someone try to pass off an M4-2 as an M4-P? They're worth a similar amount and have obviously different viewfinders, the rouse would be short lived and not profitable. Depends on how you define "better", "worse", and who you ask  Typically, things were modified as production went on. Hardly ever documented, and sometimes for an improvement for the user, and sometimes for an improvement in Leica's bottom line.
