Model identity of Leica R lenses ?

How to interpret the listed serialnumbers in the Leica R lens list on "pebbleplace.com" ?

Leica R System Lenses on Canon EOS Bodies Database

Basically the list is not a list of lens models and serial number ranges but rather an overview about compatibility between Leica R lens models and Canon EOS camera models.

Sometimes there are stated two serial numbers representing a range between what seems to be the starting serial number and the ending number for a specific model.

But mostly there is only one serial number.

Is such a single serial number the starting serial number of the specific model, or is it just an identification of the specific sample of the lens which was used for compatibility test with the different EOS camera bodies ?

What is the best cheap source for Leica lens serial numbers with regards to identification of the many different versions, models and production years of the lenses ?

I wonder why Leica itself doesn't have such a complete list on the net, it would be a great help when buying used gear.

Kind regards - Steen

Leica provided this listing until recently, but now it's ended.

I think there's one on Nemeng.com ?

Anyway, what you need to know if you can mount a lens is its version : first, second, third version of a Summilux-R 50mm ? (for example)

AFAIK serial numbers aren't crucial, they're just used to identify the lens' version.

Thanks Angora. Personally I have no intention about mounting Leica lenses on an EOS body. I want the real thing, a Kodak sensor based Leica DSLR it be an "R10" or a DMR.

What made me ask the question about how to read the serial numbers in the "pebbleplace.com" list is that I have often seen an item put up for sale on eBay where there seems to be a conflict between the engraved serial number on the lens and the printed model number on the box, at least according to the "pebbleplace.com" list.

Here is an example:

The following link is an ended auction of a Leica Apo-Macro-Elmarit-R 2,8/100

Serial number: 3654514.

Model number: 11210

eBay.co.uk: Leitz Leica Apo-Macro-Elmarit-R 2,8/100 R8 R9 xLeica (item 330128509426 end time 11-Jun-07 20:00:00 BST)

But according to the "pebbleplace.com" Leica R lens list the 180 2.0 model 11210 should start with serial number 3762000 ?

I get suspicious every time I run into these apparent mismatches between serial numbers and model numbers.

Is it just me misreading the list ?

Aren't the single serial numbers in the list "Start" serial numbers ?

Thanks Rob, I am aware of that list too and have used that one too, since I learned about it a couple of years ago from you and Guy and the other Leica shooters on another forum.

Still even Puts list seems to have some weaknesses like e.g. a lot of the serial numbers totally missing.

And also if we look at the 2.0/90mm Summicrons there are two different generations equipped with the same model number (11219). And the year 1976-1986 model should probably be presented with "from" serial number 2770951 instead of "till" etc.

I guess I'll just have to ask you guys when I can't find my way.

My main confusion (and question) is still whether the single serial numbers in John Blacks "pebbleplace.com" list are ment as "start" serial numbers, or if they are just the serial numbers of the specific copies of the lenses actually tested on the EOS bodies ?

Kind regards - Steen

Why don't you just e-mail John Black and ask him? He's got an e-mail on his pebble place page. Seems simple enough? I'm not sure anyone knows for sure about the serial numbers. You can also call leica.

Well, now I have asked John Schwarz himself as suggested by Eric (sorry for remembering Johns name wrong in the former post).

John can't say because he found that data on a german user forum years ago. At the time he understood it as the production range - the absolute start and the absolute end. He'd say they are a good guide, but he wouldn't view them as absolutes.

(Thanks John for the quick reply, if you read this !)
