Docderm Posted September 18, 2016 Share #1 Posted September 18, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) I come from a background of Nikon tilt shift lenses which I really enjoyed using for architectural and landscape photography. Would love to hear your experience using this lens on the SL. Quality of images? distortion? One of my goals is to use it for landscape panoramas by doing right shift, no shift, and left shift movements to create 3 images to merge into a horizontal panorama. Thanks! JeffWright Posted September 18, 2016 Share #2 Posted September 18, 2016 I come from a background of Nikon tilt shift lenses which I really enjoyed using for architectural and landscape photography. One of my goals is to use it for landscape panoramas by doing right shift, no shift, and left shift movements to create 3 images to merge into a horizontal panorama. Thanks! DocDerm I can't speak to experience on the SL, but I did own this lens briefly and used it on the Leica R9/DMR and Canon 1Ds mk2. This is a lens designed by Schneider, and is at least a 30 year old design. When shifted more than a few mm, barrel distortion becomes noticeable if you pixel peep, not sure how much non-photographers notice these things frankly. There is no tilt function as there are on the Nikon and Canon lenses; both of these lenses perform better. As I recall this lens was noticeably not sharp wide open with some field curvature as well, but it's been over a decade since I used it.... I'd recommend using the NIkon or Canon lenses with an Novoflex adapter. And if you feel compelled to use a Schneider, they now make a modern 28 tilt-shift lens in Canon and Nikon mounts, which carries a modern Leica equivalent price tag, but is supposed to be quite spectacular in performance. Docderm Posted September 18, 2016 Author Share #3 Posted September 18, 2016 Thanks, JeffWright It would be helpful also to hear from those of you who have used it on the SL I have found a number of reviews online which classify this lens as unimpressive optically and far from being a stellar performer. Your opinions? Thanks DocDerm
kikouyou Posted September 18, 2016 Share #4 Posted September 18, 2016 I am using this lens on the SL and i am very happy with it. I did not found the massive difference in resolution from f8 to f11 like dogilloyd. In fact i have good shots wide open. The CA is very controlled, the 12mm shift are completely usable. The only issues i have is flare sensitivity. It may be due to my clunky fotodiox temporary adapter while waiting from the one from novoflex. The other issue is colour balance that can be solved with proper grey card and manual white balance. When adjusting focus with the scheimpflug principle you play with small angles and this lens is perfect for that.
kikouyou Posted September 18, 2016 Share #5 Posted September 18, 2016 I just posted a picture with this lens on the main picture thread. You can see more on my flickr stream. None of these pictures required ca correction in lightroom
kikouyou Posted September 18, 2016 Share #6 Posted September 18, 2016 Oops i realised this thread is about the pc only lens which i also have. But my comments above are about the Schneider Kreuznach super angulon pcts 28mm f.4.5. I have not extensively tried the Leica pc only lens with the SL. Docderm Posted September 18, 2016 Author Share #7 Posted September 18, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, Kikouyou Indeed, and unfortunately, your experience with the super angulon PC TS version may not help me decide about the PC only version. But your picture using the PC TS version is wonderful and inspiring! Congratulations! I invite reports from those who have used the Leica (actually Schneider) PC 28mm lens on the SL camera. A worthwhile investment or a "meh" lens? Thanks DocDerm
Giulio Zanni Posted September 21, 2016 Share #8 Posted September 21, 2016 I am using the R 28 PC on the M and I am very happy with it. With a B+W 67/77 step-up ring you can use filters.
