Agreed. I had the 15 viewfinder and bought the 21mm viewfinder as well. The 21 is much better for the 15. The 21mm viewfinder appears to be the same as the 15, but with added frame lines. I bought mine from RobertWhite.co.uk.

As others do, I use the CV viewfinder from the CV 21mm that I own when using the CV 15mm lens. I see little reason (my way of thinking) of spending more than you need to for a viewfinder. The viewfinder lines on any external finder are approximations only, valid I think for a subject distance of 5-10 feet or so (I think), and at any distance other than what they are calibrated for, the brightlines are not accurate. I use the external viewfinders as approximations, and like everyone else, check the taken photograph on the rear LCD anyway.

A smart buy might be the CV 21mm LTM version to get both, a 21mm lens and a viewfinder for the CV15, for just USD 320. And lastly the LTM version costs less than the optically identical P-version of CV's 21mm.

Is the Zeiss finder better than the Leica 21mm brightline?

I have the Leica finder and it isn't nearly as good as the Zeiss finder. The Zeiss finders are the best available, but also a bit more expensive. But now that the prices have gone down a bit they're for sure are worth the extra cash.

ok thanks everyone

very helpful

what is LTM ?

LTM versus M Bayonet-Mount:

"Leica Screw mount aka Leica Thread Mount aka LTM aka 39mm screw mount of 1931 and the Leica M bayonet mount of 1953" as per Cameraquests web page.

The LTM version requires an M - mount adapther for the M8.

if one imagines the frame lines and "thinks inside the box" it works well (and costs nothing).

Interesting idea Bill, I'm just about to buy myself a Heliar 15/4.5 and was thinking of springing for a finder as well but it may be worth while holding off on that just to see if it works for me. Coming for an SLR background I'm so used to photographing exactly what I see that it may be a discipline that I still need to practise though.

Does anybody else make do with the finder that comes with the lens?

I'm using the 15mm view finder that came with the lens because I'm that cheap.

Besides, wearing glasses for me reduces the field of view through the viewfinder to something that approximates the 21mm image.

I'm not aware of missing framelines really.

A reminder: if, like me, you buy a 15mm Heliar and don't plan to use the viewfinder, check it out anyway. After reading this thread, I looked through mine and found it to be fuzzy. I'm glad I found out now, a month after purchase, rather than a year or two from now when trying to sell the lens to someone who wants to use the finder.

Thanks, Steve

Slightly off topic but do you guys with CV15s on bayonet mount adapters find that the lens 'lines up' on the camera?

When I fit the CV15 on to my M8 or M6 it doesn't quite rotate enough, i.e. the focus and aperture alignment marks don't sit perfectly upright and the built in lens hood is not correctly aligned. I have a voightlander adapter and another make and both are the same, as if the lens needs screwing in a bit more!

This was noted by a couple of people in another thread. If you find that thread, there is a recommendation about remounting the rear plate.

Hello Bill,

I already did that.

I took it off for a look and noticed that there were 3 mounting positions, my lens was using the middle one. I moved it round to the last position and improved the situation but its still about 5 degrees out. Not really a problem, I just wondered if it was just my lens but obviously not.

Thanks

Graham, I haven't looked closely at mine because it's still sporting the ltm adapter that Voigtlander supplied. I will mount the Milich adapter shorlty (and purchase the Wet and Wild nail polish!) as well as find some loctite liquid.

I had to tighten the Voigt adapter strongly so it would stay on.

I'm also currently wresting with the o-ring accessory (with lost of advice). It feels like I'm all thumbs as the moment.
