Steve Ricoh Posted September 10, 2016 Share #21 Posted September 10, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) I think one can get cought up in semantics. Software can and is stored in both read only and R/W memory (RAM as an example). Software is either compiled and run by a computer processor or excecuted as an interpreter line by line (eg excel)and if the program is in error it could attempt to write or store in the program area, usually resulting in a crash. Firmware is written as series of logical functions (in C for example), compiled and blown to an EEPROM or ROM and is executed after power up reset. The code is executed to programme the interconnection of logic gate connections (and more complex functions such as a DSP for example) and one the code is completely executed the 'programme' is terminated, job done, until the next power on reset of the device. Once programmed the FPGA acts as a hard wired array of gates and functions and does not rely on the stored firmware.
