hellboyjr Posted August 3, 2006 Share #1 Posted August 3, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) I recently went to Florida and brought along my D2 to this very hot and humid state, and I noticed that the EVF was getting these white static lines across the screen, and it would increase or decrease seemingly at random. Sometimes there would be no white lines obscuring the view, and sometimes, it would pretty much white-out the whole screen. The rear LCD does not have a problem, but I suspect that it eats up the battery faster. Has anyone else seen this with the D2? My camera is no longer under warranty, so assuming it's a loose connection, will this cost me a fortune to get fixed? Best, Trevor

john_r_smith Posted August 4, 2006 Share #2 Posted August 4, 2006 Trevor this particular problem is not one I have seen reported before, related to the Digilux 2 or LC1. Since the rear LCD does not display the same symptoms, we can presume it is not a sensor malfunction, although I am a bit suspicious because sensor problems have been previously reported in association with high levels of heat and humidity. Since the camera is out of warranty (are you sure it is - I thought the Leicas had three years warranty), your only recourse is to have it serviced by Leica at your expense. marknorton Posted August 4, 2006 Share #3 Posted August 4, 2006 Well of course I would take the back off the camera and check it myself. All you need is a small Phillips screwdriver to allow you to remove the screws at the sides, plus 2 under the flash and 5 underneath. Here's a picture of what you see with the back off. You can see the flex-print coming out of the bottom of the EVF and red/white wires for the backlight. The flex-print connects to a connector on the reverse side of the circuit board which you cannot see without removing the screws holding the board to the camera body. Finally, the last picture is of the side of the board which faces the front, the silver object on the right is the SD card holder, the white connector bottom left is where the EVF connects. Simple guidelines. Remove the battery, touch a grounded object before you do anything to discharge static, for example a metal water pipe, don't force anything. Use tweezers to gently remove the flex-print, clean the edge connector with something like iso-propyl alcohol and re-insert the flex print. HTH. krabat Posted August 4, 2006 Share #4 Posted August 4, 2006 Hi Trevor, I had this problem from the beginning in my DL2. Nevertheless, it happens only in very rare cases (0.00..001%) - if there is extremely bright sun light and the image is over-exposed due to wrong settings of aperture and/or shutter speed. I have no idea where these lines come from, for they are visible only in the EVF, not in the display. But, most important, these lines are NOT on the image, so I did not care very much about them. Moreover, I have been simply too lazy to contact the Customer Service. Regards, Peter.
hellboyjr Posted August 5, 2006 Author Share #5 Posted August 5, 2006 Thanks for the replies. I didn't realize that it was still under warranty, so I guess it's gooing to be sent off to Leica Service soon. Best, Trevor
Guest flatfour Posted September 25, 2006 Share #6 Posted September 25, 2006 Sorry - I have only just read this message. I also had the white vertical lines across the EVF. I found it was due to taking contre jour shots on spot metering. As soon as I took average metering, similarly contre jour, the problem disappeared. No need to send it back to Leica if the fault is as I have described. I can take spot metered shots with the bright sun behind me but not in front.
