input required: ... make an adapter/hood to fit the 15mm similar to the one shown for the 12mm ... another option is some sort of optimzed ring that clamps the 39mm filter and its ring into the existing hood ... comments?

John, I see a (small) threaded area in the front of the lens. Is this suitable for a step-up ring?

I will subscribe to the solution you settle on.

I'm on it. expect somethng next week. today the first small production run of 12mm adapters are coming back from the anodizer.

Put me down for the filter/hood adapter for 15mm if you decide to design it with 39mm glass...

Thanks.

Just a quick comment on Adorama's website system.

Unlike B&H, you can't tell what is in stock at Adorama until after you place an order. Just because it shows on the website, does NOT mean that it is in stock. I have found this out many times. If it is not in stock, you will suddenly get an email within about 24 hours saying the item is on back-order.

Try Tony at PopFlash. He is great to deal with.

Best,

Ray

I believe John Milich is away, but I was thinking about a filter holder for the CV15.

The 39mm filter sits down inside the 4 projections that serve as a hood (?) on the CV15. This filter doesn't touch the sides of the "hood" but is large enuf that this sucker's hands can't attach an o-ring that was sent to me by Stephen Gilbert who HAS gotten the same o-ring attached. (I do intend to spend some quality time with this lens and o-ring, shortly. I also have some gaffer's tape....)

How about a filter holder that slides over the "hood" projections but also has an inner portion, attached to the outer portion with 4 bridges, and which inner portion has threads for a 39mm filter? That would have the advantage of getting the filter close to the lens.

you know I couldn't do the oring 'thang either, maybe it was too thick, but it worked when I just used two 1cm strips cut from the oring one wedged into the top and bottom hood next to the filter....big detail is that I mount the filter backwards so the thread was outside, this is where I wedged the fragment of the oring.

easier to show in a picture...finger nail was the only tool used.

Two queries please:

1) Does the filter touch the front element since it is domed?

2) How easy will the filter fall out if you turn the lens upside down.

3) Any lens flare since you effectively remove what little lens hood you had?

Maybe I'll answer that for myself? It's a wet day here so I will have a go later.

I have ordered 486 filters from Detlef Stier at B+W Filter | Fotozubehör vom Feinsten bei fotologisch.com günstig bestellen | kaufen. He has or can fairly rapidly get the entire range of these filters from Schneider, which is nearby. On his site, go to "Spezialfilter". Costs for 48mm size and under are Euro 44.99, which works out to about $10 cheaper per filter than Adorama. One will have to order several filters at a time to get the savings, due to shipping issues. I am also not clear that Herr Stier has worked out a credit card deal yet (he does not like PayPal and in typical German fashion, prefers bank tansfers). Nonetheless, he has been a pleasure to work with, and he is eager to to help those of us not in the EU to get our filters.

Isn't it incorrect to mount these filters backwards? I thought I read that somewhere, or did you reverse the glass as well?

I find that a B&W 39mm filter receives a full o-ring much easier than the Leica version. I was surprised when I couldn't get the same ring to stay on a replacement bought a week ago from B&H.

no in fact it has more clearance since the Leica filter is deeper on the front..

The filter will not fall out, it is quite tight.

the little lens hood was doing nothing anyway...

photons don't care about the front or back of the filter. They are happy with both:)

I tried my heliopan 39 which has an indentation around the middle but couldn't make it work. But maybe reversed like this it would work.

the design is coming along; here is a latest drawing: the filter glass is from the 39mm filter. therre will probably be an enhancement or two before production.

Hi John, that design looks promising. Guess one will be on my shopping list. You mention that the filter glass is from a 39mm filter - is that in the exisiting mount since I'm not sure how to remove the glass from an E39 filter mount.

Maybe so or maybe not. If the IR filter being used has an anti-reflection coating on both sides, I would agree. But if only one one side I would prefer to mount the filter backwards with the AR side facing the sensor to reduce the flare and phantom reflections caused by the back surface of the filter.

george b:

if i get clever enough, i can use the glass in its orignal mount. At Sean's insistence, the hood design will be more effective as well

Yes, the only main issue that I have had with the Cosina Voightlander Super Wide-Heliar 15mm F4.5 Aspherical is the tendency to sometimes flare when my handheld flash is tilted. I'd buy a UV/IR filter mount solution for the hood alone if it was effectively well designed.
