FrozenInTime Posted July 31, 2016 Share #1 Posted July 31, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) I just spent a pleasant and education day at the Leica Store in San Francisco: Mark de Paola 'Photographer, film director and emerging artist ' did a great job recounting experiences from the fashon and film world. http://store.leicastoresf.com/noctilux-workshop-de-paola As he has almost exclusively used a Noctilux for decades, he was able to show us many examples and pass on great tips. On especially astounding skill be demonstrated was tracking focus of a model while walking backwards. A great mix of people, cameras ( M6,M7,SL, M.240, M9, MM ) and more Noctiluxes in one place than I've ever seen ( about half the group brought one ). The walk about photo exercise, was a nice challenge - a walk through china town : lens at minimum focus distance and full open. The take - a sharp image is not always necessary or the best. Indoors the practical experience was skin exposure balance and minimum focus composition - thanks to Sage ( photographer, assistant, model, opera singer and actress ) All color images are Noctilux @f/0.95 on M9-P All B&W images are Sonnetar @f/1.1 on MM uncropped jpgs from cameras Donald. DigitalHeMan Posted July 31, 2016 Share #7 Posted July 31, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) That's a lot of images...... Whilst I agree that a sharp image is not always necessary or best, I think a lot of the images in this thread could have benefitted from having at least something in focus, or maybe slightly more depth of field (although I appreciate the workshop was an exercise in using the Nocti wide open). I prefer the images where there is at least something in focus showing the 3D qualities of the lens - with my favorite being the first in post #5 which in my mind tells a story of a guy being encouraged by his friends to approach a girl, maybe a stranger he has seen on the street - all he needs is a rose in his hand! FrozenInTime Posted July 31, 2016 Author Share #8 Posted July 31, 2016 You want more images The exercise was a 45 minute whirlwind of picture taking. For me rather than normal selective editing, posting close to an unedited contact sheet tells that story and explores what works and what does not. Mark said he was uncomfortable with the approaching strangers style of street photography only doing so if someone had special appeal. I hope some of the others there can jump in and post their experiences as well.

I prefer the images where there is at least something in focus showing the 3D qualities of the lens - I definitely think you are right - the ones I feel work best have a three dimensional element to them - the square on ones e.g. the knitted hats lack impact. The five completely out of focus ones I felt had a strong form and color to keep them in the set ; but would have needed more to stand by themselves. Exodies Posted August 1, 2016 Share #10 Posted August 1, 2016 Thanks for this tread. I was inspired to shoot with fully open aperture and shortest focusing distance during our walk on Sunday. It was a lot more fun than you might expect. Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members!
