jtori Posted June 12, 2016 Share #1 Posted June 12, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) I recently wrote to the good folks at Really Right Stuff inquiring about availability of either a quick-release plate, L-Plate or L-Plate/Grip combination for the Leica Q. I've got the latter on my RX1R and it makes the camera. Here's an extract from the response I received: "I'm afraid that the demand for custom plates for the Leica Q was just not great enough for us to warrant producing them. We do have several generic QR plates that will fit, including the B6, B9, BP-CS, and even an L-plate:http://www.reallyrightstuff.com/MC-L-Multi-Camera-L-Plate While it's generic and likely a bit large for that camera, the simple shape of the body means it will have a good snug fit with the flange shape of the MC-L." I don't know how much demand exists for any/all of these items, but judging from some of RRS's other offerings and the enthusiasm generated by the Q, I can imagine them cooking something up if we let them know of our interest. Here's a link should anyone feel so inclined: info@ReallyRightStuff.com Best, Joe.
Advertisement Posted June 12, 2016 Posted June 12, 2016 Hi jtori, Take a look here RRS QR Plate, L-Plate or L-Plate/Grip for Leica Q . I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Orguy Posted June 12, 2016 Share #2 Posted June 12, 2016 I also called RRS a while back and got a similar response: "no we don't make a dedicated QR plate, but some of these other things might work....". I didn't find that very satisfying so I didn't buy anything since I couldn't see the stuff in person. For those who are going the Really Right Stuff route, what plate are you using? I haven't bought a tripod yet mainly because I don't have an answer to this question.
Jed Orme Posted June 12, 2016 Share #3 Posted June 12, 2016 I had the RRS base plate, L-plate & hand grip for my M-240 & really liked it a lot. It did add some more weight to an already heavy camera but the feel in the hand seemed very appropriate for the size & heft of the M. When I got my Q I had already discovered that RRS wasn't making anything similar for it, & got the same info that they didn't intend doing so. I wanted something for the Q so I went with the Leica hand grip & a Match Technical Thumb grip ( I had the latter on my M as well). And I have found this combination just about perfect for the Q. The hand grip is shaped quite a bit smaller than the RRS one for the M, but I think anything bigger than the Leica hand grip would be overkill, & appear as well as feel out of place & unnecessary. The thumb grip in conjunction with the hand grip gives me complete control over the camera, even allowing one handed shooting, something I never did with the M. So today if RRS were to start making something for the Q I doubt that I would be interested in getting it. However that's just me & YMMV.

marchyman Posted June 12, 2016 Share #5 Posted June 12, 2016 For those who are going the Really Right Stuff route, what plate are you using? I haven't bought a tripod yet mainly because I don't have an answer to this question. I may have posted this in another thread... if so sorry for the repeat. The plate that comes with the Peak Design Capture Camera Clip [Amazon.com: Peak Design Capture Camera Clip: Sports & Outdoors] is perfect for my Q. Almost perfect, anyway. There is down side in that the Q won't sit flat. That is not an issue for me as I usually sit it lens cap or lens shade down. Anyway, it looks like this. Note how it doesn't get in the way of opening the battery/memory card door. It works fine with my mefoto tripod and other devices where I have a clone of the RRS B2-maS Screw-knob clamp installed. dadohead Posted June 12, 2016 Share #6 Posted June 12, 2016 I'm with Jed. I also use the Leica grip with a Thumb's Up. My Q arrived like the day after I had extensive shoulder surgery, so I needed to be able to shoot one-handed for the first 3 or 4 months I had the camera. I tried switching to one or the other after I regained use of left arm, but the combo is so good it stayed set up that way. Welcome, dear visitor! jtori Posted June 12, 2016 Author Share #8 Posted June 12, 2016 I also purchased the Thumbs Up and Leica grip. They totally transform handling of the Q. Have the same setup on my X1 and always liked it. Can't imagine either camera without these. In my opinion, however, Leica has missed an opportunity by not incorporating an Arca Swiss profile into the bottom plate on their grips. It seems many Leica owners own tripods which are so equipped. Best, Joe.

I totally agree with you that I don't understand why Leica didn't at least offer two versions of the hand grip, one with the Arca Swiss base & one without. Now I am doing what marchyman shows in his photo above - using a separate screw in plate into the hand grip that is adapted to fit in the Arca Swiss mount that I have on my tripod & monopod. Although I don't use either of them that much, it would be convenient not to have to mess around taking the adapter plate in & out when I do. Also the Leica hand grip moves the tripod threads over to one side in order to allow it to screw into the camera's tripod threads, which isn't actually ideal either, but still workable. Jed Orme Posted June 13, 2016 Share #10 Posted June 13, 2016 I forgot to mention that one of the side benefits of the Thumbs Up is that the base of it protrudes just far enough out of the hot shoe, that it also prevents inadvertent adjustments of the diopter wheel on the right side of the EVF eyepiece. Wearing the camera around my neck, clothing or jackets would constantly come into contact with this wheel, & move it around. So I was forever having to readjust the diopter settings back to where I need them. For me at least, this is a very significant unintended consequence of installing this thumb grip! It measures 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" so it will overhang by 1/8" on either side of the camera. It comes with a cork gasket which you may want to remove. I use this plate on a Arca Cube with a DSLR and I removed the cork because if allowed some motion with the Cube+DSLR combo but it may not be a factor with a Q. rrissmiller Posted July 2, 2016 Share #12 Posted July 2, 2016 Hi all. As for a plate, I use the ReallyRightStuff MC-L (MultiCamera L-Plate). While not fitting perfect, it overhand the battery door, it does mount nice and allows for both Portrait and Landscape orientation. Personally I don't like the plates with either cork or no lip that prevents the camera from twisting. I tend to carry the camera on a tripod sometimes and worry about it coming loose. Leica Guy Posted July 6, 2016 Share #13 Posted July 6, 2016 I purchased Arca-Swiss plates on eBay. They're cheap. I've used 40, 50 and 60 mm plates. I prefer the 60mm. It works great with my Gitzo traveler tripod and RRS BH-30 ball head. I have a RRS L-bracket for my Canon 5D3 and I really like it. I think one for the Q would be too massive and heavy for my use model.
